The new BMW R 1300 R marks a significant step forward for BMW Motorrad’s dynamic roadster, presenting a noticeably sportier character both in its technical specifications and its visually aggressive and athletic design. This latest iteration of the boxer-engined roadster is available in four distinct model variants, each offering a unique blend of features and aesthetics to cater to a wide range of rider preferences.
The primary development goal for the new BMW R 1300 R was to achieve a comprehensive visual and technical enhancement of this iconic motorcycle. Beyond its more assertive and sportier styling, the R 1300 R boasts a range of advanced equipment, particularly in the Performance variant. This top-tier model includes a sport-tuned suspension for sharper handling, shorter hand levers for quicker control inputs, milled and adjustable footrests for a personalized and aggressive riding posture, DTC-Shift for seamless and rapid gear changes, two additional sports screens for improved aerodynamics at higher speeds, a dedicated sport seat for enhanced rider support, an engine spoiler for a more aggressive look, and high-performance sport tyres for optimal grip. These features collectively allow riders to maximize the bike’s dynamic potential.
Despite its increased sporting focus, the BMW R 1300 R remains a versatile and capable machine for both everyday commuting and longer touring adventures. BMW offers a comprehensive array of optional equipment, including seat heating for added comfort, the advanced Riding Assistant system with Active Cruise Control and Front Collision Warning for enhanced safety and convenience, a windscreen for improved wind protection, and a variety of thoughtfully designed luggage solutions, such as electrified side cases and a clever strapless tank bag. These options enable owners to tailor their R 1300 R to their specific riding needs and preferences.
The BMW R 1300 R is offered in four attractive model variants, each with its own distinct colour scheme. The basic version is available in Snapper Rocks metallic. The Exclusive variant features a sophisticated Racing blue metallic. The sport-focused Performance variant is presented in a striking white uni. The premium Option 719 Kilauea variant is finished in an elegant Blackstorm metallic.
BMW Motorrad developers aimed to make the new R 1300 R significantly more dynamic and sporty than its predecessor, a goal achieved through enhancements in design, engine, chassis, and crucially, ergonomics. A key focus was placed on creating a sportier and more active riding position. The ergonomic triangle, formed by the handlebars, footrests, and seat, has been redesigned to position the rider noticeably further forward over the front wheel, thanks to slightly rear-set footrests and flatter handlebars. This results in improved feedback from the front end, especially during sporty riding, leading to greater controllability. Simultaneously, the sporty seating position still allows for relaxed touring and cruising, even with a passenger. Optional Comfort handlebars are also available for a more upright riding posture. A range of seat variants ensures an optimal seat height for different riders, while a newly developed luggage system with electrified cases and a strapless tank bag enhances the bike’s touring capabilities.
BMW’s roadsters with boxer engines have long been popular, particularly among female riders and those returning to motorcycling, due to their good accessibility and low seat height. The development of the new R 1300 R continued this focus, ensuring a seat height well below 790 mm. In addition to the standard seat, several other seat options are available as factory-fitted optional equipment. For touring, the R 1300 R can be equipped with a newly developed case system and case holders from BMW Motorrad Original Accessories, or with preparation for the luggage system as a factory option. The cases have capacities of 26 and 29 litres, are electrified with central locking, feature interior lighting, and the left-hand case includes a USB-C charging port. The new tank bag is strapless, attaching via a tank ring.
The boxer engine in the new BMW R 1300 R has a capacity of 1,300 cc, with a bore and stroke ratio of 106.5 to 73 mm. This increase in capacity results from an enlarged cylinder bore and a new crankshaft with a reduced stroke. The engine produces 107 kW (145 hp) at 7 750 rpm and 149 Nm of torque at 6 500 rpm, making it the most powerful serial production BMW boxer engine to date. Its maximum engine speed is 9,000 rpm. The bike features three standard riding modes: “Rain,” “Road,” and “Eco,” with “Eco” utilizing BMW ShiftCam technology for maximum fuel efficiency. Optional “Riding Modes Pro” adds “Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro” modes, along with riding mode pre-selection. Engine drag torque control (MSR) is standard, preventing unstable riding conditions during coasting or downshifting.
The new R 1300 R offers an optional automated shift assistant (ASA) for easier and more comfortable riding, providing automated clutch operation and gear changes without sacrificing the dynamic shifting experience. The chassis has been completely redesigned with a new sheet metal steel main frame and an aluminium rear frame, resulting in a more compact package with increased stiffness and mass centralization for improved handling. The bike features a new 47 mm upside-down telescopic fork and a revised EVO Paralever rear suspension for enhanced handling precision. New, lighter 17-inch aluminium cast wheels further improve acceleration, braking, and handling.
The optional new electronic Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) system dynamically adjusts damping and spring rate at both the front (a first for a series production motorcycle telescopic fork) and rear, along with automatic load compensation, providing refined handling and increased banking freedom. A high-performance braking system with Integral ABS Pro is standard, with a sports brake system available as a factory option. The bike features a standard full LED headlight in a dynamic octagonal design, with an optional Headlight Pro including an adaptive turning light. The new R 1300 R can also be equipped with the optional Riding Assistant, including Active Cruise Control (ACC) and Front Collision Warning (FCW), for safer and more comfortable riding. For the first time, navigation preparation features electric unlocking for added convenience. An extensive range of optional equipment and Original BMW Motorrad Accessories allows for further customization.
