RØDE has introduced the DS3, the next generation of its professional desktop studio arm. The RØDE DS3 studio arm carries a heavier payload than the DS2 it replaces. It also adds an integrated ball head and a redesigned weighted base. RØDE aims it at content creators, podcasters and streamers who mount microphones, cameras, lights and other accessories on a desk.
What Equipment can the RØDE DS3 Support?
The DS3 supports a payload of up to 1.5kg, a clear step up from the DS2’s 950g rating. That headroom covers broadcast-grade XLR microphones such as the RØDE PodMic, plus large-diaphragm condensers, cameras and lights.
The box includes thread adaptors in 3/8-inch, 1/4-inch, and 5/8-inch sizes. Most recording and production equipment therefore mounts straight away, with nothing else to buy.
How Does the RØDE DS3 Adjust?
An integrated ball head handles positioning. RØDE describes the mechanism as precision-engineered and near-silent. That matters mid-take, when a small adjustment to a microphone, camera or light would otherwise land on the recording.
A central locking mechanism then fixes everything at the chosen angle in a single motion, not several separate steps.
What Is Different About the Base?
Like the DS2, the DS3 stands on a weighted base rather than a desk clamp. It can therefore sit anywhere on a flat surface, independent of a desk edge. That suits workspaces where clamps will not fit, and setups that move around often.
The redesigned base adds stability under heavier loads and resists wobble and tipping. Its footprint stays compact, so the rest of the desk remains free.
What Are the Differences Between the Black and White Models?
The DS3 comes in Classic Black and Crisp White, and each finish uses a different acoustic isolation material. Classic Black carries a soft-touch silicone pad on and beneath the base. Crisp White uses natural cork on both sides.
Either pad dampens vibration travelling between the desk and the equipment above it. Each material also gives the arm a distinct look on camera.
How Does the RØDE DS3 Manage Cables?
Cable clips run along the arm and route XLR and USB leads out of sight. That keeps the desk clutter down, which matters when the setup appears on camera.
