NOMOS presents a new version of its classic Tangente

The Tangente neomatik 38 Update is a smaller case diameter version of this watch. It is available in stainless steel and two 18K gold versions.

What is the Tangente neomatik 38 Update?

For Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, NOMOS Glashütte (“NOMOS”) has unveiled the Tangente neomatik 38 Update. With a case diameter of 38.5 mm, it is a reduced size version of the Tangente neomatik 41 Update. Originally launched in 2018, its highlight is the NOMOS Ring Date, a peripheral date display that frames the current date via two red markers. The Tangente neomatik 41 Update won the Challenge Watch Prize at the 2018 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) awards ceremony held in Geneva.

The calibre DUW 6101 that powers the original model has been successfully incorporated in the new Tangente neomatik 38 Update. It is presented in stainless steel and two 18K gold versions. It is the first time the NOMOS Ring Date is featured in a precious metal model.

“With the new 38.5-millimeter size, we are making our innovative ring date accessible to more people. By introducing Tangente Update in gold, we are also responding to a frequently heard request for modern dress watches, crafted from precious metal.”Uwe Ahrendt, NOMOS CEO.

What are its dial features?

All three versions have a white silver-plated galvanised dial. The stainless steel version features oxidised black hands. One 18K gold version features tempered blue steel hands; the other 18K gold version features gold hands. All have black hour-markers – both Arabic numerals and indices – hour and minute scale, and indices on the recessed small seconds subdial.

What are its case and strap features?

The Tangente straight case with angled lugs is made from either stainless steel or 18K gold, and measures 38.5 mm (diameter) * 7.4 mm (thickness). Dial side and caseback feature sapphire crystals, the former with anti-reflective coating. Stainless steel and 18K gold version with blue hands comes with a black leather strap, whereas the 18K gold version comes with a brown leather strap, the latter known as “doré.” Water resistant on the Tangente neomatik 41 Update is 5 AMT (splash resistant), so I assume it will be the same for the 38 as well.

Is it powered by an automatic movement?

Yes. It is powered by DUW 6101, an automatic movement that drives the hours, minutes, seconds and NOMOS Ring Date. It measures 15 ½ lignes or 35.2 mm (diameter) * 3.6 mm (thickness), comprises 42 jewels and has a power reserve of 42 hours.

What do we think?

Offering a reduced case size of 38.5 mm has not only made the Tangenete neomatik more wearable to a broader audience but has improved the dial balance. On the original Tangente neomatik 41 update (40.5 mm case diameter), the large gap between the lower part of the subdial and 6 o’clock was rectified by the “Made in Germany” placed on two lines. On the Tangenet neomatik 38 Update, the gap is “lesser” and more visually pleasing, making it a (near) perfect dress watch with a twist; the latter being the innovative date system.

NOMOS is renowned for making exceptional watches at relatively affordable prices, and the Tangente neomatik 38 Update is a deserving addition to the brand’s lineup.
