Since the launch of Rolls-Royce‘s Black Badge line-up in 2016, the manufacturer offers a special collection with exclusive features in terms of design and engineering.
Presently, the Black Badge range includes the Spectre, Ghost, and Cullinan cars, delivering high-performance versions with an updated styling and design of Rolls-Royce vehicles.
Which Historical Vehicles Inspired Black Badge?
A number of historical Rolls-Royce automobiles that went against the common trend played an important role in the development of Black Badge. For instance, Rolls-Royce 20 HP Brewster Brougham presented in 1928 had a black-coloured Spirit of Ecstasy and grille rather than chrome.
Another Rolls-Royce that served as a source of inspiration for Black Badge was Phantom V belonging to John Lennon that had a number of black components inside and outside.
How Did Black Badge Adapt to a New Generation of Customers?
During the 2010s decade, young entrepreneurs searched for cars that would embody both high-tech and self-expression. In response, Rolls-Royce offered Black Badge cars, which were equipped with an optimised engine, transmission recalibration, and a lowered, stiffened chassis to provide better dynamics. These cars allow the driver to enjoy the thrill of driving while still preserving the luxury that is typical of Rolls-Royce.
What Technological Solutions and Design Do You See?
The body of the Black Badge cars is covered by a special paint job. It takes 45 kg of atomised paint and several clear coats to produce a shiny finish. Important parts, like the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine or the Pantheon radiator, are covered by mirror-black chrome through a one-micrometre electroplating process.
The engines are specially tuned for higher power and torque production: the V12 engine produces more than 600 BHP of power and up to 900 Nm of torque. The special exhaust system increases the sound presence of the car. The interior uses aerospace-quality carbon fiber and aluminium inlays with Physical Vapour Deposition technology for darkening the metal surface.
Black Badge Evolution within Ten Years
Rolls-Royce first introduced Wraith and Ghost in 2016 as part of the Black Badge collection and added Dawn, Cullinan, and Spectre in 2017, 2019, and 2024 respectively. Bespoke opportunities for Black Badge include choosing an exterior paint colour and materials. Notable bespoke orders include the Landspeed Collection of 2021 and the Neon Nights trilogy in 2020. Additionally, Rolls-Royce’s collectables and accessories have drawn inspiration from the aesthetics of the Black Badge range.
Availability in Current Times
Today, Black Badge remains one of Rolls-Royce models representing its high-performance and bespoke range. Depending on the model and extent of bespoke treatment, prices can vary from around USD 548,000 to more than USD 821,000. The Rolls-Royce Black Badge Spectre, which represents the most recent introduction into the lineup, was available for commission since 2025 to a selected few customers ahead of its launch.
