Oris makes a powerful impact through sustainability

Oris is committed to sustainability and making a positive impact on the environment. Their sustainability initiatives include their Sustainable Watch Box, Aquis Date Upcycle collection, Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV watch, Brand Ambassador Yusra Mardini, and few others.

Change for the Better: World Sustainability Day

Oris, the Hölstein, Switzerland, based watchmaker is renowned for making simple, robust, and affordable timepieces, addressing a broader segment of watch collectors. They are equally committed to addressing environmental needs through sustainability initiatives, which play a key role in making a positive impact on the environment.

We look at few of their sustainability initiatives.

Sustainable Watch Box

Oris has launched a new Sustainable Watch Box. It is “aligned with Global Recycling Day,”  and reinforces the brand’s commitment to sustainability. It pushes the brand’s “Change for the Better” mission forward.

“Made from recycled, recyclable cardboard and paper, this lightweight, modular packaging reduces plastic use by 1.5 tonnes annually and cuts weight by 65%. Its collapsible design also decreases volume by 50%, lowering carbon emissions.”

“Certified climate-neutral by ClimatePartner, Oris aims to reduce emissions by 10% annually through its Emissions Reduction Programme. Starting February 2024, each Sustainable Watch Box includes recycled paper cards with a QR code for MyOris platform access, warranties, and watch details.”

Aquis Date Upcycle Collection

Watches in the brand’s Aquis Date Upcycle collection are made from PET plastic. Each model in the collection features a “vibrant dial”  with a “one-of-a-kind design.”

“Every dial is distinct, offering a personal connection to Oris sustainability story. As a leader in sustainable luxury, Oris continues to combine refined craftsmanship with eco-conscious innovations, proving that luxury can help drive positive change for our planet.”

Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV

The brand’s Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV watch was created to support the Reef Restoration Foundation, an Australian not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to conserving Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

“Oris is climate neutral and committed to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals,” says Co-CEO Rolf Studer. “Supporting the Reef Restoration Foundation is a joy and we’re delighted to shine a light on their work to counter the effects of climate change on the world’s reefs.”

Brand Ambassador Yusra Mardini

Yusra Mardini fled Syria during a civil war in August 2015, when she was only seventeen. “Through courage and determination,” she competed in swimming (butterfly stroke) at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. She founded the Yusra Mardini Foundation. An UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, she became an Oris Brand Ambassador last year. Oris collaborates with her and partners with her foundation “as an Oris Sustainability Partner, supporting her vital work to combat the global tragedy of displacement.”  She also works with Welcome 66 in the South of France, which teaches refugees how to swim.

Other Initiatives

“Oris has also expanded its collaborative program for people and planet projects, partnering on social and environmental initiatives alongside agents of change such as France’s Ligue de Football Professionnel, cricket’s Marylebone Cricket Club and the New York Yankees.”

Our Thoughts

Sustainability is a vital conversation today. Companies, multinationals, organisations, governments, NGO’s globally keep referring to it, but few do anything meaningful about it.

In the watchmaking industry, Oris takes its sustainability initiatives seriously. They “walk the talk”  when it comes to it. Their commitment to sustainability makes them even more special as a watchmaker.
