Kross Studio introduces the new KS 06 Central Floating Tourbillon

This grand-complication watch features an abundance of innovative details. It is available in 5 dial colours, and a 6th version with a natural stone dial. Each dial version is limited to 10 pieces.

Kross Studio recently introduced the new KS 06 Central Floating Tourbillon, a single watch collection. It is presently available in 6 dial versions. The Titanium Purple, Titanium Green, Titanium Gold, Titanium Blue, Titanium Black were unveiled during Geneva Watch Days, held from August 29 until September 2, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland. A month later, the brand unveiled a sixth version with a stone dial, Titanium Turquoise. Each version is limited to 10 pieces each.

The KS 06 collection is a successor to the brand’s successful KS 05 collection launched last year. It is essentially the same “iconic in-house movement, the central floating tourbillon,”  now housed in a new 42 mm case (the KS 05’s case is 45 mm) with integrated lugs, “thus offering a more traditional aesthetic without compromising on innovations, from the movement to the bracelet. Housed under a crystal dome that contributes to Kross Studio’s renown, the central tourbillon appears to float in the air, ingeniously blending horological traditions with ingenuity.”

Kross Studio is an independent watchmaking manufacture and design studio, based in Gland, Switzerland. It was founded in 2020 by Marco Tedeschi, Founder and Creative Director of the brand. He was the former CEO of Romain Jerome, a brand that ceased operations during the pandemic. Kross Studio has collaborated with media and entertainment giants such as Warner Bros., Discovery, HBO, DC Comics, Hasbro and Lucasfilm, putting “entertainment and pop culture iconic elements at the heart of their designs.”  In addition to their watches, they have a collection of accessories such as table clocks, watch rolls, travel cases, and watch winders.

Kross Studio will exhibit their watches at Watches and Wonders Geneva during April 1 – 7, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Movement Features

Patented central floating tourbillon.

“The tourbillon, its balance wheel and its fixed second wheel are elevated above the movement and hands, overlooking the barrel. Kross Studio’s central floating tourbillon, a patented technical revolution, offers a unique perspective on its complex mechanics.”

Peripheral time display mechanism.

“Another innovation of the KS 7’006 movement lies in the peripheral hour display mechanism, achieved through a planetary gear system mounted on two ball bearings, freeing the tourbillon from any obstruction.”

Exemplary movement finishing.

“The components of the KS 06 watch are decorated according to the codes of traditional watchmaking. The first testament to this expertise is the barrel bridge. Its angles are hand-beveled, its edges stretched, its recesses pearl-shaped, and the upper surface of the bridge is adorned with Côtes de Genève. This very high level of finishing, entirely carried out in-house, is made possible thanks to the development of Kross Studio’s decoration department.”

New barrel bridge.

“The barrel bridge of the KS 7’006 caliber has been redesigned to be integrated into the KS 06 case. Indeed, thanks to the new oversized case back crystal, the barrel bridge could be increased in diameter to receive top-level decoration.”

New winding system.

“Ingeniously centered on the back of the case, as in every Kross Studio watch, the crown is in direct engagement with the barrel. Winding the movement and setting the time is accomplished using a finger to rotate the crown. An effortlessly user-friendly mechanism, yet so complex to achieve. Kross Studio engineers were challenged to conceive a sealing system that would allow the passage of a mobile winding stem through the center of the case back glass, all the while ensuring optimal clarity of the movement.”

Case

– Case is made from Grade 5 titanium.

– Diameter 42 mm. Thickness 55 mm (I think this refers to lug to lug distance).

– Thickness 19.80 mm. Thickness without crystal 13.30 mm.

“The middle band and lugs are satin-finished and polished beveled, like the setting time pusher button. The bezel and case back, on the other hand, are polished, a true challenge on these grade 5 titanium components. On the case back, the central crown is circularly satin finished, beveled, and polished, and stretched along its perimeter.”

– Dial side features a dome-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides, as well as anti-UV (ultra violet) and anti-static treatments inside, “making it nearly invisible and highlighting the central floating tourbillon.”

– Caseback is made from Grade 5 titanium and features a sapphire crystal.

– The flat D-ring crown is made from Grade 5 titanium.

– Water resistance is 30 metres or 3 ATM.

Straps and Clasp

– Each dial version comes with a leather strap with white stitching, their individual colour matching or contrasting their specific dials. (The images above show the same black strap with black stitching. The brand’s website shows the different strap colour options.)

– The strap is attached to a pin buckle clasp, made from Grade 5 titanium.

– It features an interchangeable strap system, which is patent pending.

“Hidden on the inner side of the lugs, the interchangeable strap system is one of a kind and is patent pending. Reattaching the strap, typically a meticulous and intricate task has now been streamlined for simplicity. This involves placing the strap between the lugs, allowing the spring bar to slide along a specific groove until it reaches its final position. Holding the spring bar or positioning it beforehand is not necessary, nor is the use of specific tools.”

– The KS 06 collection is compatible with any strap with 20 mm width.

Our Thoughts

I mentioned this once before, that tourbillons are a dime a dozen. Often, they bring nothing new to the table. Kross Studio’s new KS 06 Central Floating Tourbillon is very well conceived and executed, with an abundance of interesting details, including those of its case, dome-crystal, and interchangeable strap system. The different dial versions add charisma and playfulness to the magnificent central floating tourbillon.

Author’s favourites: Titanium Purple, Titanium Blue and Titanium Turquoise.

The KS 06 Central Floating Tourbillon will be a welcome addition in a collection that appreciates independent watchmaking, grand complications, and bold designs.
