Maximilian Büsser and MB&F unveil a new watch, the M.A.D.1S
The M.A.D. Editions M.A.D.1 evolves to become the M.A.D.1S. It is now slimmer, has a single cylinder, and now powered by a Swiss made movement.

Maximilian Büsser (Max) and MB&F have just unveiled the M.A.D.1S, an updated version of the M.A.D. Editions M.A.D.1, first launched in 2021. Max is the founder of MB&F – short for Maximilian Büsser & Friends.

Thanks to the friends who have supported the world of MB&F; thank you to those who turned the initial sketches into something tangible on the wrist; thanks to the collectors who have followed this universe since the beginning or those who have entrusted their faith along the way. This journey of gratitude led to the creation of the M.A.D.1, a watch that gives back to the MB&F community, with a timepiece that prioritises creativity at an accessible price point.”
The new M.A.D.1S takes the concept of the M.A.D.1 further. The S stands for three key features:
– It is Slimmer,15 mm case thickness as compared to the original M.A.D.1’s 18.8 mm case thickness.
– It has a Single cylinder display, as compared to the original M.A.D.1’s double cylinder (one each for hours and minutes.)
– It is powered by a Swiss made movement – La Joux-Perret G101, as compared to the original M.A.D.1’s Japanese Miyota 821A.
Functions

The M.A.D.1S’s functions include:
– Hours and Minutes displayed on a single cylinder.
– The Arabic numerals and markers, engraved on the revolving hour ring made of aluminium alloy display (on the single cylinder), are coated with Super-LumiNova.
– The upward pointed arrow at 6 o’clock (indicates the current time on the revolving disc) is coated with Super-LumiNova.
Movement
The M.A.D.1S’s movement features include:
– It is powered by an inverted Manufacture La Joux-Perret G101, a mechanical automatic Swiss made movement. It features unidirectional automatic winding.
– The winding rotor’s shape – like a propellor with three blades – is modified from the original M.A.D.1, “that offers further transparency to the movement.” It is made of tungsten and titanium. On each of its three blades, it features a strip of Super-LumiNova.
– Its height is 4.45 mm.
– Its diameter is 11.5 lignes or 25.94 mm (approximately).
– It has 24 jewels.
– It beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph or 4 Hz.
– It has a power reserve of 68 hours.
Case and Strap
The M.A.D.1S’s case features include:
– Its case is made from stainless steel 316L.
– Its case diameter is 42 mm.
– Its case thickness is 15 mm.
– The case features “re-worked lugs for a sleeker fit.”
– On the top or “rotor” side, it features a sapphire crystal, and on the reverse or caseback it features a mineral glass. Both feature anti-reflective coating on each side.
– The caseback is covered with a stainless steel frame, just like the original M.A.D.1. “M.A.D. EDITION MAXIMILIAN BÜSSER” and “IT’S A M.A.D. WORLD” are engraved, along with other typical timepiece text.
– The crown is positioned at 12 o’clock.
– It is water resistant up to 30 metres / 3 ATM / 90 FEET.
– It comes with a black leather strap with purple stitching (Purple – Friend & Tribe edition) and blue stitching (Ice Blue for everyone through the raffle), with a folding buckle made of stainless steel.
Our Thoughts
Since its launch in 2021, the M.A.D.1 Editions (M.A.D.1 Blue “Friends and Tribe Edition”, M.A.D.1 RED, M.A.D.1 GREEN and collaboration with French artist and designer, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac) have achieved cult status in the world of horology. Featuring an alternative time display for hours and minutes, powered by a modified Miyota 821A movement, and priced at an accessible price point, the M.A.D.1 Editions have attained a strong identity of their own. Obtaining one is the difficult part.
With the launch of the new M.A.D.1S, Max Büsser and his team at MB&F have chosen not to rest on their laurels, but rather to evolve this timepiece. By making it slimmer, they have made it more desirable, at least to my eyes. And its Swiss made Manufacture La Joux-Perret G101 movement might give it more status.
The M.A.D.1S is an evolution of a cult timepiece by one of the most iconic watch industry personalities in the world. We at The Cornea Impression cannot wait to see it in the flesh and do a hands-on review.
