JLR and Allye Partner on Innovative Second-Life Battery Storage System

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has partnered with Allye Energy, a cleantech startup, to create a unique Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) called the Allye MAX BESS. This mobile unit utilizes second-life battery packs from Range Rover and Range Rover Sport PHEVs, offering a sustainable and portable solution for zero-emission power generation.

Key Features of the Allye MAX BESS:

Second-Life Batteries: The system utilizes seven previously used battery packs from JLR’s PHEV models, reducing environmental impact by extending their lifespan. Each pack undergoes minimal processing before being integrated into the BESS.

High Storage Capacity: With a storage capacity of 270kWh, a single MAX BESS can power an average UK household for nearly a month.

Rapid Charging: The BESS can charge up to nine Range Rover PHEVs simultaneously using a standard CCS-capable charger. Additionally, it can connect to renewable energy sources at fixed or off-grid locations for eco-friendly charging.

Replacing Diesel Generators: The MAX BESS eliminates the need for polluting diesel generators typically used for off-grid events, testing, and vehicle launches. JLR estimates their Engineering team using the BESS for testing the new Range Rover Electric will save over 15,494kg of CO2 in a year – equivalent to seven round-trip flights from London to New York.

Portability and Versatility: Weighing less than 3.5 tonnes, the MAX BESS is easily transportable and can be used for various applications. It can provide energy storage for JLR dealerships, allowing them to leverage renewable energy sources like solar and support fast-charging infrastructure.

Commercial Availability: Beyond JLR’s internal use, the MAX BESS will be commercially available for purchase and use by other businesses and organizations.

Environmental and Business Benefits:

This project aligns with JLR’s Reimagine strategy, a £15 billion investment in electrification that focuses on building a comprehensive EV ecosystem. The MAX BESS represents a significant step towards JLR’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2039. It promotes a circular economy for batteries by giving them a second life before eventual recycling. The growing market for second-life batteries is expected to reach $30 billion globally by 2030, showcasing the potential of this innovative approach.
