Even today, it still turns heads in the street. But the Renault Twizy is a granddaddy of car production, celebrating twelve years on the market this year. This exceptionally long career will soon come to an end, as the Losange quadricycle will be leaving the Valladolid production lines for good in September.
A clever cross between a car and a scooter, the Twizy was resolutely designed for city use, thanks to its compact dimensions: 2.32 m long and 1.19 m high. Unlike a two-wheeler, it could carry two passengers – almost – sheltered from the elements once fitted with the optional wing doors! There was even a 22-litre mini boot under the passenger. This same boot increased to 170 litres on the Cargo version.
Replaced by the Mobilize Duo at the end of the year
Technically speaking, the 6.1 kWh battery provided a range of around 80 km. Two engine outputs were offered: 5 bhp on the Twizy 45 without a licence and 17 bhp on the Twizy 80, which could reach 80 kph. While these figures are still respectable today, they are no longer enough to compete with the competition, which offers products that are both more attractive (Citroën Ami, Fiat Topolino, Microlino, etc.) and more technically advanced (Ligier Myli, eAixam, etc.). That’s why Renault is planning to respond with the Mobilize Duo, which goes on sale at the end of the year.
