The disenchantment with diesel continued in June. After being overtaken by petrol and then hybrids, it is now the turn of electric vehicles to taunt diesel vehicles. With a market share of 15.1%, electric cars have for the first time overtaken diesels in Europe, which are only taking 13.4% of the market. Sales of electric cars rose by 66.2% compared with June 2022, reaching 158,252 units. The big champions are the Netherlands, with a 90.1% increase in electric car sales. With the arrival of Chinese manufacturers, this growth is set to accelerate in the years ahead.
Petrol still in the lead, followed by hybrids
In the meantime, petrol cars continue to dominate sales on the Old Continent, with no fewer than 379,067 models sold last month. While this represents an 11% increase on June 2022, the market share of petrol vehicles has nevertheless fallen, from 38.5% to 36.3%. Hybrid sales rose by a solid 32.4%, with 254,100 vehicles sold. Germany (+59.1%) led this strong growth, along with Italy (+29.9%), France (+27.9%) and Spain (+22.7%).
Fewer plug-in hybrids
Finally, sales of plug-in hybrids rose by 13.4% in June 2023 compared with June 2022. However, this increase conceals a wide disparity: while Spain (+51.7%) and France (+49.9%) did indeed drive up sales, Germany literally turned its back on plug-in hybrids (-39.2%), to the benefit of electric (+64.4%), petrol and even diesel (+10.3%) cars. As a result, their market share finally fell from 8.2% to 7.9%.
