Porsche celebrates 75 years with ‘Festival of Dreams’ event

Global celebrations see the launch of the Porsche Vision 357 Concept car

Porsche turned 75 this year, and to commemorate this honorary occasion, the brand held celebrations across the globe. Porsche India organised a two-day car carnival called the ‘Festival of Dreams’ in Mumbai, inviting all car enthusiasts and the public.

Porsche’s‘ Festival of Dreams’ event further hosted the grand launch of the latest hardcore model under the 718 banner, the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4RS, in India. Launched for INR 2.54 crores, the 718 Cayman GT4RS is the most hardcore iteration of Porsche’s baby sports car. It gets equipped with a 500hp 4.0-litre, 6-cylinder naturally aspirated engine capable of clocking 0-100kph in 3.4secs. The Cayman GT4RS also features a host of cooling ducts to aid aerodynamics and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic parts to keep the car light.

The event was conducted at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. The entire Porsche portfolio was on display, ranging from the standard cars to the motorsport-spec RS cars. Even the electrified Taycan model was present, along with a couple of pre-owned 911 models and a customised example from Porsche’s Exclusive Manufacktur personalisation division. Porsche officials claimed 2022 to be the best year for Porsche yet, with the most annual sales in India’s history. The German performance brand aims to host more drive experiences and global product launches in the subcontinent in the future.

Meanwhile, celebrations on a global scale were also underway. Porsche devised a unique display in Berlin at the ‘DRIVE. Volkswagen Group Forum’ facility from 27 January. The commemorative exhibition is called the ‘Driven by Dreams. 75 years of Porsche sports cars’ and will run until 10 September 2023.

Following the conventional carmaker style of celebrating an anniversary, Porsche also unveiled the Porsche Vision 357 concept car, a 356 homage and a modern reinterpretation of what might Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car look like today. Unlike most modern concepts, this Porsche Vision 357 concept sits on the recently launched 718 GT4RS platform with a naturally aspirated mid-mounted flat-six engine delivering 500hp. “With the Porsche Vision 357, we have created a very special birthday present. It underlines the importance of our design DNA based on the 356,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “The study is an attempt to coherently combine the past, present and future. The proportions are reminiscent of the historical model, while details visualise the view into the future.”

The anniversary celebrations will continue outside Stuttgart at Retro Classics as well. Retro Classics, the leading trade fair for classic car culture, takes place from 23 to 26 February, and one can expect Porsche to put up a celebratory stall. That would be followed by an extensive special exhibition being organised at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen on 9 June. On 10 and 11 June, Porsche Germany will highlight the anniversary at the ‘Festival of Dreams’ at the Hockenheimring. Porsche intends to mobilise the entire ‘Driven by Dreams’ exhibition by transporting all event materials to more than 60 destinations in Europe and the US in a ‘Heritage Truck’ specially designed for the anniversary year. The conclusion of the worldwide activities is the ‘Rennsport Reunion’ car festival in California from 28 September to 1 October.
