GM Wants To Race In F1

General Motors (GM) requires no introduction. It is one of the biggest names in the automotive industry, with brands such as Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick under its umbrella. Even in the world of American motorsports, GM is well-known for bagging multiple championships. But, there’s one avenue it has never explored – Formula One. That, however, is likely to change because GM has announced its intention to enter what is arguably the most prestigious sport in the car racing space.

Here’s what we know so far. GM will team up with Andretti Global to enter the world of Formula One. And if all goes well, the automotive giant will be represented by the Cadillac brand. When? We don’t know, yet. But the Andretti Cadillac team is planning to submit an Expression of Interest when the FIA opens the window for applications. If selected, the team intends to compete as soon as possible with at least one American driver.

For those who aren’t aware of Andretti Global, it is a racing enterprise and parent company to Andretti Autosport and other Andretti racing ventures. The company has vast experience in the motorsports world and currently competes in seven different series worldwide. And this GM-Andretti collaboration won’t be new. They last paired for the return of Chevrolet to the NTT Indycar Series back in 2012. Together, the duo bagged nine wins across two seasons, and Driver, Team and Manufacturer titles in 2012.

As far as the brand Cadillac is concerned, it already has a pedigree in motorsports. Since 2017, it has been competing in American sports car racing in IMSA. The brand will continue to race in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship with its all-new hybrid Cadillac V-LMDh.

The Formula One scene has only grown in the USA over the years. Three venues – Las Vegas, Miami and Austin – are already part of the calendar. So, it isn’t a surprise to see an American brand get in on the action.
