The next-gen Land Rover Defender will be available as a fully electric model

A big revolution is coming to the old school 4X4. Despite the obvious references to the past, this category of vehicles must also adapt to electrification. As a result, the next generation of the Land Rover Defender will offer a 100% electric version. This model will enable it to compete with the future Mercedes EQG, which will be the 100% electric variant of the legendary G-Class.

Full electrification will first be introduced on the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in 2024. These two vehicles are based on the MLA platform, which allows the adoption of an all-electric architecture. As a result, Land Rover is actively working on the development of these two versions before their launch. In the meantime, the Defender will undergo a mid-career facelift.

This update will be cosmetic and mechanical but will not allow it to receive electric motors. The next generation of the Defender is scheduled for 2025-2026. This will be based on the MLA platform and will gain all the latest features offered by the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The next generation Defender will not be exclusively electric, however. Both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains will be available.

On the technical side, rumors suggest several battery options, including a large-capacity accumulator of around 100 kWh on the long version. The aim is to achieve a minimum range of 500 km in mixed conditions. The electric Defender will also have a number of electric motors giving it a power output of around 600 PS and of course four-wheel drive. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2026.
