2025 Austrian Grand Prix: McLaren Takes Dominant 1-2 as Verstappen Retires

McLaren Racing celebrated a strong 1-2 finish at the 2025 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, with Lando Norris taking a commanding victory ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri at the Red Bull Ring. Charles Leclerc completed the podium for Ferrari, while Max Verstappen’s home race ended in disappointment with a first-lap retirement.

Drama unfolded even before lights out, as Carlos Sainz’s Williams stalled on the formation lap, triggering a delay and yellow flags across the circuit. Though the Spaniard managed to restart and return to the pits, his brakes soon caught fire, forcing an early retirement before the race had officially begun.

Once the race finally got underway after a 10-minute delay, Norris made a clean getaway from pole, while Piastri surged into second. Behind them, chaos erupted as Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli made contact following a rear lock-up on the Mercedes, resulting in both drivers retiring and bringing out the safety car on the opening lap.

Racing resumed a lap later, with Norris leading the field ahead of his team-mate. George Russell began applying pressure on his former teammate Lewis Hamilton for fourth, as McLaren’s drivers engaged in a tense but clean fight for the top spot.

Around Lap 20, Norris made his pit stop, leaving the race lead to his teammate Oscar Piastri and rejoined the track behind Hamilton in fourth place. Further down the field, several incidents shaped the race. Red Bull Racing driver Yuki Tsunoda received a 10-second penalty after tagging Alpine’s Franco Colapinto on Lap 31, sending the Argentine into a spin.

Piastri also lost time after a light clash with Colapinto during a lapping attempt, though both continued with minor consequences. Despite the on-track scuffles, the front order remained largely unchanged through the closing stages.

Norris reclaimed the lead through pit strategy and never looked back, crossing the line to claim his third win of the season. Piastri ensured a McLaren 1-2, while Leclerc brought Ferrari back to the podium. Hamilton and Russell rounded out the top five.
