What is the 24 Hours of Le Mans?
Let’s start with the basics. The 24 Hours of Le Mans, originally called the Grand Prix de Vitesse et d’Endurance, is one of motorsport’s most historic races, dating back to 1923. Held annually in Le Mans, France, the event challenges drivers and teams to compete across multiple car classes over a gruelling 24-hour period—testing not only outright speed, but also endurance, reliability, and teamwork.
The race takes place at the Circuit de la Sarthe, a 13.626 km track that blends permanent circuit sections with public roads. It features 38 corners—18 left-handers and 20 right-handers—many of which are named after iconic brands, historic events, or notable landmarks. From Dunlop and Tertre Rouge to Mulsanne, Indianapolis, and the Porsche Curves, every section of the track has its own story to tell.
The fastest part of the circuit is Indianapolis, while Arnage is the slowest. The race lap record belongs to Mike Conway, who set a time of 3:17.297 in 2019 with the Toyota TS050 Hybrid LMP1.
Which classes are there in the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans?
- Hypercar
Introduced in 2021, the Hypercar category became the premier class in endurance racing and the FIA World Endurance Championship, which includes the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. This top-tier class features two types of vehicles: Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) and Le Mans Daytona h (LMDh) cars.
Both LMH and LMDh machines are eligible to compete not only in the FIA WEC but also in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, allowing them to race in both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Daytona.
Two Distinct Concepts
Le Mans Hypercar (LMH)
LMH regulations offer manufacturers flexibility in design, permitting a wide range of technical architectures. These cars may be equipped with hybrid systems on the front axle, depending on the chosen configuration.
Le Mans Daytona h (LMDh)
LMDh cars are built on a standardised platform, where the core structure—including the chassis minus the internal combustion engine, bodywork, and hybrid components—is supplied by one of four approved constructors: Dallara, Multimatic, Ligier, or Oreca.

Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2)
The Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) class features closed-cockpit race cars developed exclusively for competition. This category is reserved for independent teams and is a staple of endurance events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the European Le Mans Series, the Asian Le Mans Series, and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Four approved chassis manufacturers supply LMP2 cars: Dallara (P217), Onroak Automotive (Ligier JS P217), Oreca (Oreca 07), and Riley/Multimatic (Riley MK30). All LMP2 entries are powered by Gibson engines, the class’s sole designated engine supplier.
To control costs, the maximum price for a new LMP2 chassis—excluding the engine and homologated electronics—is limited to €483,000.
In terms of driver composition, each LMP2 crew must include at least one Silver- or Bronze-rated driver. Teams featuring a Bronze driver are classified separately under the LMP2 Pro/Am category.

Le Mans GT3 (LMGT3)
The GT is now built around the FIA GT3 technical platform, which replaced the previous GTE regulations starting from the 2024 season. Participation is restricted to officially recognised manufacturers that produce over 2,500 road cars annually.
GT3 cars competing in the WEC and at Le Mans feature specific modifications tailored for endurance racing, including illuminated number panels and leader light systems to aid visibility and classification during the event.
For the 2025 season, nine leading automotive marques will be represented in the LMGT3 category through privateer entries: Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Lexus, Mercedes-AMG, McLaren, and Porsche.
To ensure a balance of experience and accessibility, each driver line-up must include at least one Bronze-rated driver and either a second Bronze or a Silver-rated driver.
