The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63

Inspired by the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63, IWC Schaffhausen launches the Big Pilot’s Watch dedicated to this ‘Grand Edition’ model by the automaker. Read on to know more….

On first look, you know that this timepiece has been built with a lot of care and thought with the way it integrates IWC’s and Mercedes-Benz’s utilitarian origins with a modern twist. This is the newly launched IWC Big Pilot’s AMG G 63 which is available in two variations.

The gold variation is made of 18K Armor Gold which is made of modified microstructure and tends to be harder as well as more wear-resistant compared to the 5N Gold. The gold colour is contrasted using the black textured dial and black rubber strap with microfibre inlay; the strap is finished with an IWC-engraved buckle (Which is in the same colour as the case). This black and gold colour is inspired by the exterior paintwork as well as the interior finishing of the recently launched Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 ‘Grand Edition’.

The black variation is made of the ultra-strong Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) which was developed in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLC). This is the first time, IWC has used this material in a watch. Unlike other carbon composites, this carbon composite is embedded in a ceramic matrix rather than a polymer. This texture is inspired by the front grilles and air-intakes of the Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63.

Just as the name indicates, this is a big watch with 46.5mm case size and a thickness of 14.6mm; this is definitely going to stand out on your wrist with its sheer presence. The whole big-size trend is also carried on the enlarged screw-down crown with IWC logo embossed on it. The dial can be seen through a convex sapphire glass that has AR coating on both sides. In this edition, IWC has gone with 3-D appliques for the indices, rather than printed ones and the eye-catching feature are the outer rings of the sub-dials which light up in the dark just like the headlights of the AMG G 63.

Once you turn over the watch, you can see the transparent case-back with Mercedes-Benz logo print that is inspired by the AMG G 63 spare wheel cover design. The automatic movement calibre 52010 is visible through the transparent case back in all it’s glory of 252 components as well as 31 jewels. The timepiece comes with 168 hours (7 days) of power reserve which is astounding and offers a water resistance of 100 metres (10 Bar / 328 ft).

Overall, the watch looks great and does seem to sit well on the wrist but would still have a large presence on the wrist (at least for all those average-sized wrists). The gold variation is priced at CHF 35,000 (Approx. AED 143,960) and the black one at CHF 40,000 (Approx. AED 164,522). This is definitely built for a watch collector who has an affinity for cars and of course, vice versa, but again, it’s also something for any die-hard IWC fan!
