The European Union will allow illuminated logos on cars by 2025

Back-lit grilles are already legal

The lighting in our cars has evolved dramatically in a relatively short period of time. In less than thirty years, halogen, xenon, LED, laser and OLED technologies have followed one another. Each new innovation has enabled designers to create increasingly stylish headlights that give vehicles a personality all their own. The European Union has now taken a new step that will further expand the field of possibilities.

Until now, illuminated logos have been banned, but by 2025 they will be legal. Until now, this solution has only been used on concept cars intended for showcasing at auto shows. The arrival of illuminated logos will undoubtedly be a new field of conquest for manufacturers who will compete with each other to integrate them appropriately with the rest of the lighting.

This is a good thing, as the European Union has recently made illuminated grilles legal. Logos could only be the logical next step. In fact, some models already offer an illuminated grille. This is the case of the Skoda Enyaq iV, which can be equipped with this kind of grille as an option, given that its grille is closed, since it is an electric car. Even earlier, Mercedes had already tried an illuminated logo on the Actros, the German brand’s truck.

All these lights were prohibited for obvious safety reasons. When the vehicles are in motion, they would be a major distraction for road users. Under pressure from manufacturers, the EU finally backed down. The proposal is now on its way to the United Nations World Forum for Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations.

If the proposal is accepted and validated by the organisation, cars sold worldwide will be allowed to carry illuminated badges. It now remains to be seen whether the new equipment will be offered as standard or as an option, what its main and secondary functions will be and, above all, which brands will be the first to make the move.
