Suzuki Lifetime Sales Go Past 80 Million

The majority were sold in Japan, followed by India.

The first-ever mass-produced Suzuki, the Suzulight, was launched in Japan in October 1955. That was 68 years ago. Over the decades, the Japanese brand has spread its wings way beyond its home country’s borders. Fast forward to August this year, its lifetime vehicle sales worldwide surpassed 80 million units.

Math lovers would love to delve deeper. So, here goes! Of the 80 million, 27.9 million were sold in Japan and 51.27 million in other markets. Further breakdown reveals after Japan, which accounts for 36 per cent of the total Suzuki sales, India is the second-largest market with 32.6 per cent. The rest of Asia, Europe, and others (Latin America, Oceania, Middle East, Africa, etc.) accounted for 13.5 per cent, 10 per cent, and 7.8 per cent, respectively.

Suzuki started exports in 1959 with the Suzulight. In 1975, Suzuki began operations of its first plant outside Japan. It was in Pakistan. Then, in 1983, its manufacturing facility in India went live. The plant in Hungary started production in 1992. Presently, Suzuki has 15 vehicle manufacturing plants spread across 10 countries.

The Japanese automaker breached past 10, 20, and 30 million lifetime sales in June 1989, June 1998, and December 2004, respectively. Similarly, the 40, 50, 60, and 70 million sales milestones were crossed in May 2009, April 2013, November 2016, and January 2020, respectively.

With 16.1 million sales, the Alto series contributed 20 per cent to the total sales. The first Alto was launched in 1979, but it’s in India where it sold the most. The WagonR range, with 9.5 million units, is in second place at 11.8 per cent contribution. And the third spot is the Swift series with 8.95 million sales, accounting for 11.2 per cent of the brand’s lifetime sales. The Vitara and Jimny series, with 3.95 million and 3.33 million sales, respectively, have accounted for 4.9 per cent and 4.2 per cent of overall sales.

Congratulations, Suzuki!
