Renault is planning to put the Renault 5 Turbo into production. Like its 1980s predecessor, it will be rear-wheel-drive. However, instead of the original car’s four-cylinder engine mounted in the middle, the new car will have two rear electric motors. While the old car had around 160bhp, its spiritual electric successor will have more than three times the power.

Torque hasn’t been mentioned, but the electric hatchback will need just three and a half seconds to reach 100 kmph from a standstill. That’s 0.3 seconds quicker than the MG4 XPower, which has “just” 429bhp.
The new car will come with side vents and a bulging wheel arches in a throwback to the original R5 Turbo. We also notice the massive 20-inch wheels on what remains a compact car. The two-tone alloys are wrapped in 245/35 ZR20 tyres up front and 275/35 ZR20 at the rear.

While this is the first hot hatch to carry the Renault badge, there have been unique versions. Some of you will remember the 460-hp 2017 Zoe E-Sport and the 375-hp 2022 R5 Turbo 3E.
The regular Renault 5 features a single-motor, front-wheel-drive layout. The dual-motor, rear-wheel-drive performance version uses a “carbon superstructure” claimed to be “lightweight and extremely rigid.” Weight wasn’t mentioned, but the previous concept car — which also had two motors in the back — weighed 1500 kg. The Alpine A290 is slightly lighter, at 1478 kg.

The new Renault 5/Turbo 3E resembles the cars sold decades ago. The regular model at the time also had front-wheel drive with the engine mounted in the front, while the unique Turbo model certified put the engine behind the seats, with power going to the rear wheels.
The Renault 5 is expected to go on sale in 2026.
