Lowering CO2 emissions from an existing vehicle is a tricky business. And it is one aspect that cannot be ignored if the brand wants to survive in Europe, which is not only one of the most profitable markets for automakers but also one of the strictest on vehicular emissions. This is why brands have had to devise ways to keep pace with the pollution norms, which will only become more stringent. The latest to join the bandwagon is RAM.
The American brand has introduced a new engine option for Europe. It’s described as the Pentastar V6 with eTorque mild-hybrid system. This 3.6-litre powerplant produces 305hp/364Nm and is backed by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which replaces the traditional alternator. The electrification system helps the vehicle while starting and aids the fuel economy. RAM claims the Pentastar 3.6-litre with eTorque consumes 19 per cent less fuel than the 5.7-litre V8.
The electrified internal combustion engine will be available in Europe with three RAM 1500 models – Big Horn, Laramie and Rebel. Although from the same family, the trio do differentiate on appeal. The Rebel, for example, promises to be the toughest of the lot. It comes with stuff like coil suspension with a 1-inch lift, 9.7-inch ground clearance, all-terrain 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratec tyres and Selec-Speed control (on 4×4 versions).
The Laramie, one of the best-selling models in the continent, packs more creature comforts. Its features list includes a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system, remote vehicle start, forward collision warning system, heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist. RAM also offers the Night Edition package for the 150 Laramie, which ropes in leather bucket seats, black interior trim, black night edition badging and heated mirrors.
The Big Horn has a balanced recipe on all fronts. Besides the chrome-rich exteriors, the 1500 Big Horn dons 18-inch wheels (can be upgraded to 20 inches) and halogen lights (optional LED units available). Sport and Black Appearance packs are available for the Big Horn, in addition to two different customisation options for the interior. One could have a standard 5-seat layout or a 6-seat one with bench seats in both rows.
