Paris Air Show 2025: Pratt & Whitney Reveals New Engine Upgrade

It’s for the PW1100G-JM powerplant that propels the Airbus A320neo aircraft family.

To significantly increase the engine’s durability, Pratt & Whitney has developed a new upgrade option for the PW1100G-JM powerplant that propels the Airbus A320neo aircraft family. Unveiled on the opening day of the Paris Air Show 2025, the upgrade, called Hot Section Plus (HS+), is derived from the GTF Advantage engine, which promises twice the time on the wing compared to today’s GTF engine.

Pratt & Whitney claims the HS+ upgrade includes only about 35 part numbers, which can be incorporated during ordinary maintenance visits. Once done, it will offer 90-95 per cent of the durability gains of the GTF Advantage engine. Moreover, GTF engines with HS+ will be completely intermixable and interchangeable with the current GTF and GTF Advantage engine models, equating to worry-free operations.

The Pratt & Whitney GTF engine is among the most popular powerplant choices for narrowbody aircraft worldwide. The primary reason is its economic benefits, which include up to 20 per cent better fuel efficiency than previous-generation engines.

On the other hand, the GTF Advantage engine boasts the most modern hot section in the single-aisle market. Courtesy of an improved design and better coatings, the oxidation rate is slower, which enhances the overall lifespan of the mechanicals.
