NEWS: Nissan and Honda plan to merge

The combination of the two car makers will create the world’s third-largest car maker by sales, with plans to find a ‘direction for the possibility of business integration’ by the end of next month.

Japanese car makers Honda and Nissan have announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding this week, which will result in an integration of the marques, along with Mitsubishi, a smaller member of the Nissan alliance.

The move comes as part of the manufacturers’ electrification in future years, an area in which they have fallen behind German and Chinese counterparts in recent years. Makoto Uchida, CEO, President, Director and Representative Executive Officer said of the plans: “Today marks a pivotal moment as we begin discussions on business integration that has the potential to shape our future. If realized, I believe that by uniting the strengths of both companies, we can deliver unparalleled value to customers worldwide who appreciate our respective brands. Together, we can create a unique way for them to enjoy cars that neither company could achieve alone.”

Honda and Nissan signed a previous Memorandum of Understanding in March regarding a strategic partnership for the era of vehicle intelligence and electrification, and signed a further MOU in August to deepen the framework of this strategic partnership.

This move could potentially revive both carmakers in a never-before-seen way, building off the strength of each pre-existing brand and customer base, with the opportunity for the creation of some really fantastic automobiles in the process.
