Volvo Car Group introduced its latest offering – EX60 – a five-seater electric SUV to mark its entry to the widely popular electric vehicle segment. The vehicle was built on Volvo’s upcoming SPA3 electric architecture. The move is aimed at providing users access to newer battery tech, updated vehicle architecture, and expanded software offerings as a step towards electric propulsion.
How far can the Volvo EX60 travel on a charge?
The differentials offered in the VOLVO EX60 are various, but the maximum range of distance it can cover according to WLTP specifications is up to 810 kilometres in an all-wheel drive configuration. Other configurations include an all-wheel drive configuration that can drive up to 660 kilometres, as well as a rear wheel drive configuration of up to 620 kilometres. These are among the longest range electric SUV that have been announced in its class.
What are the charging capabilities of the EX60?
Volvo claims that the EX60 is compatible with rapid charging to the tune of 400kW, which would allow the battery to recover some 340 km of range within a mere ten minutes. This promises to be achieved by the new battery cell design, which is paired with the cell-to-body approach to improving the efficiency of the battery with the aim of reducing the weight of the vehicle.
What technology does it utilise, and what software does it employ?
The EX60 is Volvo’s first model built around the SPA3 platform with hardware consisting of Volvo’s own Hugin Core computational system, in addition to technology provided by Google, NVIDIA, or Qualcomm, as well as software from Google, NVIDIA, or Qualcomm. Volvo’s EX60 is also the first model in Volvo’s fleet that employs Google Gemini, an AI assistant with chat-based voice control without any fixed command words required for voice control.
Volvo says its system also boasts faster responses, enhanced navigations, and an easier interface compared to other models in Volvo’s fleet.
How Volvo approaches the EX60 with regards to safety?
Safety is an area of ongoing focus within EX60’s development, and the car features a safety cage made of boron steel. Real-time monitoring is provided by an extensive set of sensors, while Volvo boasts of a multiple adaptive safety belt within the EX60. Software updates of this EX60 model are being considered, allowing safety features and driver assistance systems.
What design features does this building include? What kind of interior?
The EX60 also maintains the Scandinavian design philosophy and aerodynamic efficiency typical of other Volvo vehicles. The vehicle maintains a low front section, tapered sides, and a sloping roof to optimise its 0.26 drag coefficient. The floor and wheelbase have been extended to provide adequate legroom and cargo space; it is also equipped with a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound System and headrests with Apple Music and Dolby Atmos capabilities.
Pricing, Availability, and Launch Timeline
The Volvo EX60 can now be pre-ordered across a variety of European markets, with further availability announced across American shores this late spring season. The manufacturing process is set to begin this spring season at Volvo’s manufacturing plant in Sweden. The delivery process of the rear-wheel drive P6 and all-wheel drive P10 will begin this summer, with the P12 long range arrivals shortly after this. The manufacturer has also announced a 10-year battery warranty, with further perks including a free home charging kit also promised during this initial rollout process.
