MINI has joined forces with the Austrian design studio Vagabund to create two special editions of the MINI Countryman. In addition to customising and modifying this model, building sound systems, and testing their social potential, the studio decided to experiment with new design variations.
What characterises the design modifications in one-off models?
These cars have received many exterior modifications, designed to alter proportions typical of the MINI Countryman. Modified wheel arches allow for the vehicle to acquire a broader design. The front and rear bumpers have been redesigned and incorporated into the new body. The car’s side panels include three-dimensional logos of brands used, as well as a modified radiator grille.
The chassis has been raised to increase ground clearance. 20-inch wheels with 3D-printed speaker-like covers have been installed on each vehicle.
Two different visual elements are employed on the vehicles: a light-coloured model with accent highlights and a black monochrome design with a more technologically oriented look.
What is the sound system like on the vehicles?
One important customisation is replacing the back side windows with an exterior sound system. The sound system is designed for outdoor use and features a speaker box with a polymer-granite casing to ensure optimal sound quality.
The tweeters and midrange speakers are integrated into the vehicle’s body, while the subwoofers are mounted in the rear of the car. With the tailgate open, the sound system broadcasts outward, thereby making the car a portable sound source.
Each car works independently, though both together can form a larger sound system.
What part does customisation play in this partnership?
Customisation is an important part of this project, as Vagabund implements its design concept on the base car. The customisations not only affect the aesthetic but also include practical components, such as a laser-cut aluminium panel roof rack with stainless steel mesh.
Another element of the design is the portable cassette player with a 3D-printed case, providing a contrast to the modern audio systems in the cars and serving as an experimental component of the project rather than a functional one.
What are these cars designed to be used for?
These cars are not meant for regular transportation; rather, they are built for events, featuring built-in audio systems and modified visual components.
They focus on interactive events when cars serve as mobile installations, bringing together music and design.
Specifications, pricing, and availability information
These two automobiles share the same underpinnings as the MINI Countryman S ALL4, which usually comes with a turbocharged petrol engine delivering about 218 BHP (160 kW) and 360 Nm of torque, with a maximum speed of roughly 228 kmph.
Since they are both custom cars, there is no official pricing information, as they cannot even be bought. As a comparison, however, the ordinary MINI Countryman S ALL4 costs approximately $40,000 USD.
One of the two vehicles has been planned for its unveiling at Auto China 2026 in Beijing. After its presentation, the two cars would then be shown in several exhibitions and public events.
