MING introduces the impressive new 37.02 Ghost

A two-hand watch, it is crafted from the difficult to machine Grade 2 titanium. The Ghost is extremely light at 32 grams and has a water resistance of 260 metres. It is a limited edition of 250 pieces.

MING has introduced the 37.02 Ghost, their latest two-hand watch.

“The Ghost started with the idea of ethereal light playing off a forest of architecturally finished (i.e., not polished) metallic surfaces – claddings, buttresses, pillars, struts, baffles. What if we could somehow translate that into wrist presence? Given how many of our design inspirations are architectural it would be remiss of us not to try.”

The Ghost 37.02 is crafted from pure or Grade 2 titanium, not the Grade 5 titanium typically used in watchmaking.

“Pure titanium – known as grade 2 (confusing, we know) – is difficult to machine as it’s highly ductile and has a low elastic modulus, meaning the material can deflect instead of cutting, but at the same time, it tends to also work harden through heat cycling and impact making it change character during machining and become increasingly harder to cut. As a bonus, grade 2 titanium shavings and dust are also highly flammable – even though the bulk material is incredibly inert.”

Key Features

Functions

Central hours and minutes.

Dial

Two-part dial made from grade 2 titanium. It features a radial and circular brushed finish. The hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova X1.

Case

Case is made from grade 2 titanium. It features an all-brushed finish. Diameter: 38 mm. Thickness: 11 mm. Lug-to-lug distance: 44.50 mm. Lug width: 20 mm. Head weight: 35 grams. Dial and caseback feature a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides and filled with liquid Super-LumiNova (dial side). Water resistant up to 260 metres, although 100 metres is stated on the caseback. “We decided to leave it as 100m on the caseback as an inside joke to our engineering paranoia.” It comes with a grey goat leather strap fitted to a ‘flying blade’ tuck buckle made from grade 2 titanium, featuring a brushed finish.

Movement

Powered by Sellita for MING SW300.M1, an automatic movement that drives the hours and minutes. According to online sources, it beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph or 4 Hz and incorporates a stop seconds function for precise time setting. It features anthracite skeletonised bridges and a custom winding rotor. Power reserve: 50 hours (approximately).

Our Thoughts

MING does it again. I have mentioned before that MING has a design identity that is second to none. If it does not say “MING” on the dial, you will still know it is a “MING.” In addition to their global cult following, every watch introduced by them has a story or reason behind it. With the 37.02 Ghost, they made life harder for themselves by using grade 2 titanium! This sort of obsessive thinking and taking on challenges – thanks to the drive of the brand’s founder, Ming Thein, or MT as he is known – and watches that are relatively affordable (except for few exceptions), makes them a force to be reckoned with in the watchmaking industry. The 37.02 Ghost is another winner by them.

I met with Praneeth Rajsingh, the brand’s CEO, at their booth at Time to Watches in Geneva earlier this month. In addition to learning about their plans, I was able to experience their watches, including the mighty impressive 37.09 Uni and 21.01 ‘Project 21.’ MING has made a lasting impression, and they have a bright future ahead.
