MING has just introduced the 37.09 Uni, a new version of its incredible award winning dive watch, the 37.09 Bluefin. The 37.09 Bluefin won the Sports Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) award ceremony, held in Genève, Switzerland on 13 November 2024.

“Connoisseurs love sushi, and the stomachs of the MING team are no exception: the 37.09 Bluefin, recently awarded the Sports Watch Prize at GPHG 2024, is proof of this. To celebrate the win, we’ve decided to serve a portion of tuna’s more exotic oceanmate in the form of the 37.09 Uni.

Sea urchin, or uni in Japanese, has morphed from a prosaic necessity into a highly sought after delicacy. It also remains a largely acquired taste – it’s briny, sweet, and a little funky with a blast of umami that contrasts with its buttery softness. It is usually served in a gunkan-maki – over rice, wrapped in seaweed to keep it all together – and seasonings are minimal to give centre stage to the sweetness of the uni.”
Key Features
Functions and Operations
Image: Orange emission Super-LumiNova contrasts really well with the sapphire dial, DLC coated case, and FKM rubber strap.
Central hours, minutes, and seconds.
60-click timer scale on an internal unidirectional rotating dial, operated via a sealed crown at 4 o’clock. The unidirectional rotating mechanism is secured by sprung bearings. This crown does not pull out or screw down, features luminous fill so it is easily located underwater, and is easily operable underwater.

Time setting via the crown at 2 o’clock.
Hacking seconds for precise time-setting.
Dial, Hands, and Case
Image: Lume shot. Designed for depths of 600 metres or 1968.50 feet.
Sapphire dial.
Super-LumiNova X1 coated hour-markers on sapphire crystal and inside of top crystal.
Minute scale from 12 o’clock to 4 o’clock coated with orange emission Super-LumiNova.
Super-LumiNova X1 coated hour and minute hands.
Seconds hand coated with orange emission Super-LumiNova.
“The Uni introduces a new design for the hour indices, carries an abundance of Super-LumiNova on the dial, top crystal and hands, and is the first MING to have orange emission Super-LumiNova – to echo its namesake.”
Image: An incredible interpretation of a dive watch.
Case is made from 316L stainless steel. It is DLC coated with a matte-brushed finish.
Diameter: 38 mm. Thickness: 12.80 mm. Lug-to-lug distance: 44.50 mm. Lug width: 20 mm.
Dial and caseback feature a domed sapphire crystal, with anti-reflective coating on both sides.
Water resistant up to 600 metres “with additional safety factor.”
“Like the sea urchin, our 37.09 Uni is a black-DLC armoured dive watch with orange highlights, and an inspiration or two from its namesake. We enjoy it as a palate cleansing break from the rest of the collection but remain confident in its survival abilities thanks to its 38mm DLC-coated case that’s cleverly engineered, ensuring pressure balancing and water resistance to 600m with a sapphire caseback. Like the Bluefin, it has a rotating sapphire timing dial that can be operated underwater.”
Movement
Powered by mechanical automatic calibre Sellita for MING SW300.M1. It drives the hours, minutes, seconds, and hacking-seconds for precise time setting.
Jewels: 25. Frequency: 28,800 vph or 4 Hz. Both according to online sources.
Power reserve: 50 hours.
It features anthracite skeletonized bridges and a winding rotor with contrasting circular brushing.
Strap
Image: Strap appears to be super comfortable.
Watch comes with a new moulded FKM rubber strap.
FKM is short for Fluorine Kautschuk Material and is a fluorine-based rubber, known for its high density, great temperature resistance and stability, especially when exposed to all kinds of chemicals. It offers universal compatibility with all of Ming’s 20 mm lug watches and was designed to follow the natural curvature of the wrist.
Features curved bars for quick release and is fitted with a DLC coated ‘flying blade’ tuck buckle with micro-adjustment.
Our Thoughts
Image: Perfect underwater companion. Perfect for watch GTG’s and a great conversation starter.
I am equally impressed with the 37.09 Uni as I was with the 37.09 Bluefin, which I wrote about in May last year. The 37.09 Uni is another chapter in the phenomenon that is MING. MING has achieved a consistent design language, not an easy feat to achieve for such a young brand. If it didn’t mention MING on the dial, you would still know it is a MING. Those who love dive watches or just want to add a super cool watch to their collection, the 37.09 Uni is for you.
