Mercedes Introduces AMG Versions Of GLC Coupe

Of the two derivatives, one carries the ‘E Performance’ tag.

In July this year, Mercedes launched two AMG variants of the new GLC. But that was limited to the model’s SUV form. Not anymore. The GLC Coupe range has now been rounded off with the introduction of its two AMG derivatives. And unsurprisingly, the same mechanical recipes (more or less) have been carried over from the GLC SUV.

Let’s start with the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic Coupe. Under the bonnet, it packs a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The fossil-fuel burner outputs 416hp/500Nm, whereas the belt-driven starter generator aids propulsion with an additional 13hp/150Nm. As a result, this derivative can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds and reach 250kmph before the electronic speed governors kick in.

Those looking for punchier performance can settle for the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance. That uses the same 2.0-litre engine as the AMG 43 derivative but with a stronger turbocharger. The end result is an output of 469hp/545Nm. That’s not where the story ends because part of the powertrain is a rear-mounted electric motor which offers up to 204hp for 10 seconds (107hp continuous). Mercedes claims that the maximum system output is 671hp/1,020Nm. The 0-100kmph sprint time is 3.5 seconds, while the top speed is electronically pegged at 275kmph.

Regardless of the variant, the AMG GLC Coupe has a 9-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel-drive and rear-axle steering. Returning to the electric motor in the 63 S derivative, it gets its juices from a 6.1kWh battery, which can replenish itself via the energy recovery system or a 3.7kW onboard AC charger. The battery will last for just 12km when driving using electricity alone.

AMG-spec styling indoors and outdoors is, of course, part of the package. And yes, there’s a list of optional extras to make an even stronger statement. AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping adjustment and AMG Dynamics (drive modes) are standard.

Those who place an order for either of these AMG GLC Coupe derivatives within the first year of their launch will get the option to order in an ‘Edition 1’ form. The ‘Edition 1’ will offer exclusive bits and pieces, such as the paint, interior trim and ‘Edition 1’ branding inside-out.
