Mercedes’ Insane Concept AMG GT XX Electric Hypercar

Officially a concept, but in every meaningful way a prelude to Mercedes-AMG’s next-gen electric supercar, the Mercedes-AMG GT XX is a blisteringly powerful, deeply technical, and emotionally charged machine. Underneath its Sunset Beam Orange skin lies a pioneering high-performance electric platform — AMG.EA — that brings together motorsport-inspired engineering, Formula 1 battery tech, and a level of sustained EV performance never seen before on public roads.

A Production-Ready Concept?

Although Mercedes labels the AMG GT XX as a concept, it’s more of a rolling prototype. The showcase car even had a VIN number stamped into the windshield, and the architecture underneath, including the tri-motor drivetrain, battery tech, and chassis, is destined for series production in 2026. This four-door electric coupe is a full-blown hyper-EV with a claimed peak output of over 1,360hp and a projected top speed exceeding 360km/h.

And it’s not just about peak figures. Mercedes-AMG says, unlike most other EVs, this car will sustain that performance. Think three flat-out laps of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, nearly 40 miles, with no drop-off in power.

Impressive Powertrain: Three Axial Flux Motors

At the heart of the Concept AMG GT XX’s propulsion system are three axial flux electric motors, developed by YASA Ltd, Mercedes-Benz’s UK-based electric motor subsidiary. Unlike conventional radial flux motors, these pancake-shaped motors direct electromagnetic flux parallel to the shaft, enabling remarkable efficiency and packaging.

The rear axle houses two of these motors within a single High Performance Electric Drive Unit (HP.EDU), along with their own planetary gearsets and silicon carbide inverters. This EDU weighs just 140kg and cranks out more than 860hp! The front axle gets a single axial flux motor that acts as a power and traction booster when needed, automatically decoupling at low loads to reduce frictional losses and enhance efficiency.

Formula 1 Battery Tech, Reinvented

Matching the radical motors is an equally revolutionary battery pack. Developed in-house by AMG with help from the Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains division in Brixworth (the same team behind Mercedes F1 power units), the battery uses 3,000+ cylindrical cells in a direct oil-cooled layout. The chemistry is nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminium (NCMA) with a silicon-rich anode for optimal energy and power density.

Each cell sits in a laser-welded aluminum casing that offers superior cooling and electrical conductivity compared to traditional steel. These innovations mean this 800V+ system can withstand sustained high-output driving and still recharge at 850+ kW, adding 250 miles of range (WLTP) in just five minutes. That’s roughly the distance from Affalterbach to Spa-Francorchamps.

Mercedes is working with Alpitronic to deploy prototype ultra-fast chargers capable of delivering this current via standard CCS cables. Even on today’s 350kW fast chargers, the AMG GT XX will reportedly charge faster than anything else on the road.

Aero & Design: Sensual Brutality

The AMG GT XX’s silhouette is unmistakably a fastback coupe with a low-slung bonnet, wide stance, and muscular rear shoulders, but every detail is tuned for aerodynamic performance. It has a drag coefficient of just 0.198Cd, thanks to an ultra-flat body, flush-mounted active aero wheels, and a special underbody design that uses the Venturi effect to generate rear downforce without needing a large spoiler.

Lighting up the drama are luminescent paint segments using electroluminescence tech — a first for AMG. These glowing strips along the side skirts not only add visual flair but also serve as charge indicators during plug-in sessions. At the rear, a massive MBUX Fluid Light Panel with over 700 programmable LEDs communicates vehicle status with dazzling visual feedback.

Aero Wheels With Built-in Actuators

One of the most remarkable innovations is the active aero-wheel system — tech that seems like it’s taken straight out of a sci-fi movie. Each 21-inch forged wheel includes five aero blades that adjust autonomously to balance brake cooling and aerodynamic drag.

Each wheel generates its own electricity via a mini-generator and communicates wirelessly with the car to open or close its blades. Each wheel also gets an integrated battery that gives it enough reserve power to allow 200 movements without needing external power.

Fully Immersive Interior Experience

Inside the cabin, there’s exposed metal, a squared-off steering wheel like the AMG ONE, and 3D-printed ergonomic seat pads based on body scans. Materials like LABFIBER Biotech Leather Alternative, made from recycled GT3 racing tires and proteins, replace traditional leather. Door pulls are made of bio-engineered silk created from genetically modified bacteria!

The entire cockpit is built around the driver. A 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14-inch touchscreen sit within a minimalist frame inspired by AMG’s racing DNA. A massive structural crossmember and visible H-braces reinforce the connection to motorsport.

Claimed To Be The “Best V8 AMG Ever!”

Despite being electric, the AMG GT XX doesn’t give up on visceral engagement. It simulates a V8-like soundtrack that booms through interior and headlight-mounted external speakers, complete with deep bass and rev-matched tones tied to accelerator and wheel-speed data.

Some reports claim that a particular Mercedes board member declared during prototype testing, “This is the best V8 we have ever developed.” Obviously, we’d take that claim with a tablespoon of salt. We can also imagine AMG’s own M113 Supercharged V8 laughing its oilpans off.

The First Of Many

The AMG GT XX is the flagship showcase of the new AMG.EA platform, but it won’t be the last. A high-performance AMG SUV is already confirmed, and the modular battery and motor setup opens the door for sports cars and body styles of all kinds.

As AMG boss Michael Schiebe puts it, “The Concept AMG GT XX forges a whole new dimension of performance. And the best thing is that this car is a true AMG with every fibre of its being.”
