Korean Air Strikes New Deals With Boeing And GE

The airline will buy 103 new planes and 19 engines and invest in engine support to strengthen its position after merging with Asiana.

Largest Aircraft Order in Korean Air’s History

Korean Air has announced a major deal to purchase 103 aircraft from Boeing, along with 19 spare engines and a 20-year engine maintenance plan from General Electric (GE) and CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and France’s Safran Aircraft Engines. The total investment is around USD 50 billion (KRW 70 trillion), making it the largest aircraft order in the airline’s history.

New Fleet Includes Boeing 777, 787, and 737 Models

The order includes:

  • 20 Boeing 777-9s
  • 25 Boeing 787-10s
  • 50 Boeing 737-10s
  • 8 Boeing 777-8 freighters

Deliveries will happen gradually until 2030. This supports Korean Air’s plan to grow after merging with Asiana Airlines and prepares for future travel demand.

Engine Support and Maintenance Contract Worth $13.7 Billion

Korean Air will also buy 11 spare engines from GE Aerospace and eight from CFM International. The total cost for the engines is USD 690 million (KRW 1 trillion). In addition, GE Aerospace will provide engine maintenance for 28 aircraft over 20 years, valued at USD 13 billion (KRW 18.2 trillion). This ensures long-term safety and stable operations.

Fleet Simplification for Efficiency and Sustainability

Korean Air plans to use five aircraft types: Boeing 777, 787, 737, Airbus A350 and A321neo. This will help save fuel, cut emissions, and improve passenger comfort.

Strengthening U.S.–Korea Aviation Partnerships

The deal also deepens Korean Air’s long partnership with U.S. aviation companies. The airline has worked with Boeing, GE, Pratt & Whitney, and others for decades, and continues to grow its presence in the U.S. market.

Building a Strong Future for Global Growth

Korean Air Chairman Walter Cho said the investment shows Korean Air’s commitment to becoming a top global airline. With this deal, the airline is building a strong foundation for the future.
