A one-minute flying tourbillon with an innovative globe-shaped day and night indication.

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024: April 9th – April 15th, 2024.

IWC Schaffhausen has unveiled the Portugieser Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024. It belongs to IWC’s Portugieser family of timepieces.

Highlights

– An 18-carat Armor Gold® case. Due to its improved microstructure, Armor Gold® is substantially harder and more wear-resistant than the conventional 5N gold typically used in crafting timepieces.

– Its flying one-minute tourbillon comprises of 56 parts and weighs only 0.675 grams.

– Its globe-shaped day and night display displays the 24 hours day and night cycle with a small sphere that rotates around its axis. The globe-shaped indicator is visible on both the dial and caseback side.

Functions and Dial

The Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night’s functions are:

– Hours and Minutes.

– Flying and hacking one minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock.

– Globe-shaped day and night indicator at 9 o’clock.

Its Obsidian black, highly polished dial “radiates a tremendous depth and creates a beautiful contrast.”  The hands are gold plated, and the Arabic numerals and IWC logo are crafted in gold and applied on the dial.

Case and Strap

The Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night’s case is crafted in a polished and brushed18-carat Armor Gold ®. It has a case diameter of 42.4 mm and a case height of 10.8 mm. On both the dial and caseback side, there is a convex sapphire glass, with anti-reflective coating on both sides. It is water resistant up to 6 bar. The timepiece comes with a curved black alligator strap from Santoni of Italy with an 18-carat Armor Gold® folding clasp.

Calibre

The Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night is powered by in-house mechanical hand-wound calibre 81925. It has 22 jewels, beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph or 4 Hz and has a power reserve of 3.5 days or 84 hours. The high-power reserve is a result of IWC’s Diamond Shell® technology, that “reduces friction and improves the flow of energy in the movement.”  The calibre features an integrated tourbillon stop. When the crown is pulled out, the tourbillon mechanism stops, and the timepiece can be set with “down-to-the-second accuracy.” It features movement finishing such as circular Geneva stripes and gold-plated components. Calibre 81925 is visible via a sapphire caseback.
