Iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class Gets Facelift

Updated looks, distinctive customisation options, electrified powertrains and more!

45 years since its conception in 1979, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the Geländewagen, is poised to maintain its iconic status as a luxury off-roader with the latest facelift. Besides styling tweaks, the new model also receives electrified performance upgrades, modern driver assistance systems, advanced digitalisation, and several customisation options.

Exterior: Fine-drawn changes keep the design recognisable

Subtle changes keep the G-Class’ lionised boxy exterior familiar. These include a new radiator grille with four instead of three horizontal louvres, redesigned front bumpers (with a renewed squircle look), and rear bumpers. It also borrows the all-electric EQG SUV’s A-pillar cladding and spoiler lip for better aerodynamics and acoustics. While the characteristic door handles, door-closing sound, protruding indicators, and exposed spare wheel remain. The new model also comes with LED headlights and 5-twin-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels (upgradable to 22 inches) as standard.

Interior: Nappa leather, 12.3-inch displays and Augmented Reality for Navigation

Numerous exterior elements have been replicated in its very luxurious cabin, like the side air vents which are shaped like the round headlights. The latest multifunction steering wheel with touch control, ambient lighting and nappa leather upholstery complete the interior. With the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, dual touchscreen 12.3-inch displays and phone integration via Android Auto Wireless or Apple CarPlay, the new G-Class is now more connected than ever. Augmented Reality for navigation also comes as standard. It superimposes graphical navigation and traffic information onto live images, helping drivers navigate better. It even displays the traffic light colour. Customers can also add temperature-controlled cupholders, a Rear Seat Entertainment system with two 11.6-inch touchscreens and a dashcam on request.

Besides the Professional Line or Exterior Night Package for the exterior, or the Exclusive and Superior Line for the interior, the MANUFAKTUR range also allows for extensive customisation options.

Powertrain: turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, 585 hp AMG V8 and 9-speed transmissions

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G 500 gets a twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine which produces 449 hp and 560 Nm of max. torque. The six-cylinder diesel engine in the G 450 d churns out 367 hp and 750 Nm. At the top is the G 63 AMG with a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo which delivers 585 hp and 850 Nm of max. twist. This allows the AMG variant to get from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds and hit a 220 km/h top speed. All models get the integrated starter-generators (ISG) which briefly delivers an additional 20 hp and 200 Nm. It also feeds the 48-volt on-board electrical system.

All models are equipped with either a 9G-TRONIC torque-converter or AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission with a rear-biased permanent all-wheel drive system.

Offroad Equipment: Differential locks, low range gearing, “transparent” bonnet, and new drive programmes

The G-Class will continue to use the tried-and-tested ladder-frame chassis, three mechanical differential locks and low range reduction as well as a rigid rear axle and independent front suspension. The AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active, hydraulic roll stabilisation and adaptive adjustable damping (standard on all models) makes a significant contribution to its dynamism. It also comes with newly added drive programmes like “Trail,” “Rock” and “Sand”. The new Offroad Cockpit provides an overview of the data for off-road driving and the “transparent bonnet” provides a virtual under view of the vehicle to avoid rocks and rubble.

At its market launch the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be available at a price starting from 122,808 euros (Dh. 487,662 approximately). Watch this space for more information on the pricing, warranty and specifications details for the UAE.
