Hyundai Alcazar Gets A New Petrol Engine

It replaces the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre mill.

The Alcazar has become the first recipient of Hyundai’s newest petrol engine. It’s a turbocharged unit that replaces the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre mill, which produced 159hp/192Nm. Gone with that is the 6-speed torque converter as well. The new powerplant is available in six variants, with prices ranging between INR 16.75 lakh and INR 20.25 lakh. Here’s the complete list:

• Prestige MT (7 Seater): INR 16.75 Lakh

• Platinum MT (7 Seater): INR 18.65 Lakh

• Platinum (O) DCT (7 Seater): INR 19.96 Lakh

• Platinum (O) DCT (6 Seater): INR 19.96 Lakh

• Signature (O) DCT (7 Seater): INR 20.25 Lakh

• Signature (O) DCT (6 Seater): INR 20.25 Lakh

The new engine has a displacement of 1.5 litres and is boosted by a turbocharger. Hyundai claims that the peak output is 160hp/253Nm. Compared to the now-axed mill, the new one offers a significant increase in torque. Two of the six variants this engine is available in come with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The remaining four introduce a 7-speed DCT in the mix. Mileage? According to the carmaker, the Alcazar can clock up to 17.5kmpl with the petrol-MT combo and 18kmph with the petrol-DCT affair. And yes, the new engine complies with the stricter BS6 norms and can run on E20 petrol.

Hyundai has also taken the initiative to garnish the top-tier variants with a new grille and puddle lamps and make six airbags a standard feature across the SUV’s range. Regarding the 1.5-litre diesel engine, there’s no change to its output or the transmission options.

The new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine will also serve the all-new Verna, which debuts on March 21, 2023. The Hyundai Creta, Kia Carens and Kia Seltos will also gain this new powerplant and, in the process, ditch the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol mill.

The Hyundai Alcazar competes with Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV700 and MG Hector Plus. Even the Toyota Innova Hycross is a direct rival. So, out of the lot, which one would you drive home?
