GMC Sierra EV Debuts With 640Km Range

Underpinning the brand’s third all-electric offering is GM’s EV-specific Ultium platform.

After the two Hummer EV derivatives, the pickup and the SUV, GMC has added another all-electric model to its portfolio. Meet the first-ever Sierra EV, built on GM’s Ultium platform, like the other pure-electric GMC models. The newcomer will be available from 2024 in the Denali Edition 1 variant. However, the model’s range will be expanded with two more iterations – Elevation and AT4 – in the following year.

The Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 will pack two electric motors, one on each axle. That gives birth to an electric 4WD system, much-needed for the 754hp/1,064Nm of maximum output. Even though the pickup isn’t a featherweight, the sprint from 0-100kmph will be around 4.5 seconds. And the maximum trailering capacity is a smidge over 4.3 tonnes.

GMC says that with a full charge, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 can travel up to 640km. Impressive! And equipping it with GMC’s Power Station Pro ropes in the ability to power external appliances and even an EV. For charging Sierra EV’s battery, one could use the 19.2kW onboard AC charger. And because the vehicle features an 800-volt electrical architecture, it can also replenish the battery pack using DC feeds of up to 350kW. GMC claims that a splash for 10 minutes via a recommended fast charger can add more than 160km to the range.

Features? The GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 won’t disappoint. In addition to Super Cruise, four-wheel steering and Crabwalk functionalities, the pickup packs 22-inch wheels with 33-inch tyres, LED headlamps and powered front and rear trunks. Indoors, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 offers over 40 inches of display real estate, comprising an 11-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14-inch head-up display and GMC’s first portrait-oriented 16.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The list goes on to include up to 14 available camera views, a hands-free start function, a panoramic glass roof and GM’s Ultifi vehicle software platform, which offers the connected-car experience.

GMC has devised the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 exclusively in a Crew Cab form. Behind the cabin is a 5-foot 11-inch cargo bed, which can be expanded up to 9 feet with the MultiPro Midgate feature. However, the MultiPro Tailgate option stretches the loading area up to 11 feet. In addition, the 60:40 split rear second-row seats can be adjusted in four different configurations. This flexibility raises the practicality quotient further.

Deliveries of the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 are likely to commence in early 2024, with a starting price tag of USD 107,000. Details of other variants will surface close to the pickup’s start of production. GMC says that the range could start at around USD 50,000.
