Citroen India Unveils C3 Aircross With Space For Up To Seven

The 4.3-metre-long SUV will also be available in a five-seat guise.

Until now, Citroen offered three models in India – the C5 Aircross, the C3 hatchback and its battery-powered sibling eC3. Now, we get to see the fourth one. It’s called the C3 Aircross, and no, it isn’t a toned-down version of what’s on sale in Europe. Instead, this C3 Aircross has been designed specifically for emerging markets. For Citroen, it’s the second of the three new models planned under the “C-Cubed” strategy. With around 90 per cent localisation, it will be built at the Thiruvallur plant in Tamil Nadu.

In truth, the C3 Aircross is the most important model for Citroen India. Why? It’s an SUV that will sit in a hugely popular and competitive segment. And to lure customers, it will have to stand out from the crowd. And in terms of design, at least, it indeed does!

The front is reminiscent of the C3 family, but the Aircross boasts a different bumper and grille. The quirkiness continues on the side and the rear with a chunky and curvacious profile. The dual-tone paint job and the two-done interior add to the theatre. Although the roof tapers ever-so-slightly towards the back, the overall silhouette delivers the SUV vibe.

We’ve got some numbers. First, the overall length is about 4.3 metres. As for the height and width of the C3 Aircross, they are 1,654mm and 1,796mm. Citroen goes on to mention “class-leading” headroom in the second row (at 1,000mm) and “excellent” elbow room (at 1,430mm). Furthermore, the Citroen C3 Aircross will have 17-inch alloy wheels and a choice between a five- and seven-seat layout. In the latter form, the middle-row bench seat has a 70:30 split, and the last row is “ideal for children”. Those seats can either be folded down or removed altogether.

With the last row removed, the Citroen C3 Aircross offers 511 litres of luggage room. However, if those seats are only folded, the storage area is 347 litres. The five-seat version can gulp 444 litres of stuff. For the knick-knacks, there are several cubby holes all around the cabin. The SUV also has several bottle holders and a roof-mounted AC blower.

Features? The Citroen C3 Aircross will pack a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster with up to six different display modes, a tyre pressure monitoring system and up to five USB ports for charging.

For propulsion, the Citron C3 Aircross will use the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that puts out 110hp/190Nm. The only gearbox option, to begin with, will be a 6-speed manual. As with the C3 hatchback, Citroen will offer various customisation options for the C3 Aircross. Besides going à la carte, one could choose one of the multiple pre-defined styling packages.

Citroen confirms that the C3 Aircross will go on sale in India in the second half of 2023. It will compete with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Volkswagen Taigun and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
