BYD Unveils Atto 3 EV For India

The pure-electric SUV is available in just one fully-loaded variant.

BYD (Build Your Dreams) has unveiled its second EV for India. It’s called Atto 3, and unlike the E6, the newcomer is available exclusively for private use. BYD has devised just one variant of the Atto 3 and it is up for grabs with the minimum booking amount set at INR 50,000. The Chinese brand will use its plant near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to assemble the five-seater EV.

The Atto 3 has a front-mounted electric motor with 201bhp/310Nm on offer. That’s enough for a 0-100kmph sprint time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 160kmph. Considering that the SUV weighs over 1.7 tonnes (without occupants or luggage), those performance figures will more than do the job.

The propulsion system gets its juices from a 60.48kWh battery. That, if used responsibly, can deliver an ARAI-certified range of up to 521km, with battery down from 100 to 5 per cent. As far as charging capabilities are concerned, the Atto 3 supports both AC and DC feeds. One could use a 7kW AC charger to charge the car or find a CCS 2 DC charger (up to 80kW) to replenish the battery. Charging times? Here are a couple of examples. Using a 6.6kW AC charger, the EV will take around 9.5 hours to charge from zero to 100%. However, the 80kW DC charger reduces the wait time to 1.2 hours. Using the same charger, the wait time for a zero to 80 per cent battery level is close to 50 minutes.

The BYD Atto 3 packs loads of features. The list includes a Vehicle-To-Load power supply function, regenerative braking, a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, powered front seats, an 8-speaker sound system and a panoramic sunroof. Features such as a 360-degree view monitor, adaptive cruise control, wireless mobile charger, PM2.5 air filter, powered and heated ORVMs, Hill Descent Control, auto emergency braking and Lane Keeping Assist are also available.

The Atto 3 comes with three years of free 4G data, six years of roadside assistance and six labour-free services. As for the warranty, the battery is covered for 8 years/1,60,000km, whereas the motor and motor controller are covered for 8 years/1,50,000km. BYD will launch the Atto 3 in December 2022, with deliveries set to commence the following month. In India, the BYD Atto 3 competes directly with the Hyundai Kona Electric and the MG ZS EV. If you had to pick one, which would it be?
