BMW India Drives In The XM

Deliveries of the second-ever standalone M model will commence in May next year.

It was in September 2022 when BMW first unveiled the XM in production guise. And now, the German carmaker has launched it in India. Needless to say, the crossover arrives in the country as a direct import, and that too in just one variant. Price? That’s INR 2.60 crore, excluding taxes. By the time it lands on the road, that figure would easily nudge or even surpass the INR 3 crore mark (depending on in which state the vehicle is registered). As for the deliveries, they will start in May 2023.

The XM is BMW’s second-ever standalone M model, after the mid-engined M1 from the 1970s. What that essentially means is that like the M1, the XM shares almost nothing with any other BMW. Another first that the XM brings to the equation is that it is the first hybrid M car.

The BMW XM houses a blend of a 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8, an electric motor, an all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. With a peak output of 653hp/800Nm, the crossover can hit 100kmph from nothing in 4.3 seconds and reach 250kmph before running into the electronic speed nannies. Get the optional M Driver’s package, and you can push the XM to 270kmph.

Yes, the XM also offers electric-only driving. The 25.7kWh battery that powers the 197hp/280Nm electric motor can last for up to 88km (WLTP). Once it runs out of juice, one could use a 7.4kW AC charger to replenish it. The wait time from 0 to 100 per cent charge is 4.25 hours.

The features list is impressive, to say the least. It includes adaptive M suspension, 22-inch light-alloy wheels, four-zone automatic climate control and a Bowers & Wilkins 20-speaker, 1,475-watt sound system. Other features, such as a surround-view camera, wireless charging, a head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and automatic tailgate operation, are also available.

There are several optional extras available, which could help garnish an XM with more bling and features. Stuff like BMW Individual Package with Night Gold Accents, different finishes to the M Sport brakes, 23-inch rims and Driving Assistance Professional. BMW India offers a 2-year/unlimited km warranty for the XM. Besides that, there are service and repair packages on offer to add that extra peace of mind.
