A. Lange & Sohne unveils the Datograph Up/Down in an 18-carat white gold case with a blue dial

A 125-piece limited edition in celebration of the Datograph’s 25th anniversary.

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024: April 9th – April 15th, 2024.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic Datograph, A. Lange & Söhne has unveiled the Datograph Up/Down in an 18-carat white gold case with a blue dial at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024.

When launched in 1999, the Datograph was the first chronograph in decades to feature an all new in-house chronograph calibre, “developed from the ground up”.  The Datograph featuring this iconic calibre L951.1 and Lange’s signature outsize date at 12 o’clock, went on to become one of the greatest timepieces of all time.

Launched in 2012, the Datograph Up/Down is an evolution of the original Datograph. Its calibre L951.6 features enhancements over the original L951.1, an increased-power reserve and a power-reserve indicator on the dial at 6 o’clock – hence the name “Up/Down”.

Functions and Dial

– Hours, Minutes and Flyback Chronograph hands located centre of the dial.

– Outsize date at 12 o’clock.

– Small seconds at 9 o’clock subdial.

– Precisely jumping minute counter at 3 o’clock subdial.

– Power reserve indicator at 6 o’clock.

The blue dial is crafted in silver, a nice contrast to the two rhodié colour subdials. The hands and baton hour-markers are crafted in 18-carat white gold. The hour and minute hands are coated with luminous material. The hands on both the subdials are blue. On the power reserve indicator at 6 o’clock, “AUF” means fully wound, and “AB” means fully unwound state of the calibre’s mainspring. “AB” portion is red, a nice contrast to the rest of the dial.

Calibre

The Datograph Up/Down is powered by in-house mechanical hand-wound calibre L951.6, which features a “column-wheel chronograph with a freely oscillating balance spring and a balance with eccentric poising weights.”  It comprises of 451 parts, beats at a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour or 2.5 Hz, and has a power reserve of 60 hours.

Typical of Lange’s calibres, L951.6 is assembled twice. It is technically sophisticated, and features both a complex architecture and superior movement finishing. And like every Lange timepiece, features a hand-engraved balance cock. Calibre L951.6 is visible via a sapphire caseback.

Case and Buckle

The Datograph Up/Down’s case in crafted in 18-carat white gold. The crown is at 3 o’clock, the 2 chronograph pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock, and typical of Lange design, the pusher for the outsize date at 10 o’clock. It has a case diameter of 41 mm and a case thickness of 13.1 mm. It is water resistant up to 30 metres of 3 bar. Both the dial and caseback side has a sapphire crystal.

It comes with a blue alligator leather strap and an 18-carat white gold buckle.
