A hands-on with the IWC Pilot Chronograph 41 Edition Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team

IWC announces a special watch made in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team has enjoyed the long-time support and alliance with luxury watchmaker IWC. And now, this Swiss watch maker, also known as IWC Schaffhausen, sees the partnership extend much further with the launch of a more special Pilot chronograph made in association with the Mercedes F1 team. It’s called the IWC Pilot Chronograph 41 Edition Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team and boasts of being the first “team” watch. .

Mercedes F1 team fans shouldn’t be worried, as IWC has decided to cater to the broader audience as well. Enthusiasts can buy this non-limited Chronograph 41 Edition Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team exclusively on IWC’s website, priced at $8,300.

This collaboration between IWC and Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team was announced ahead of the first-ever Miami Grand Prix race earlier this year.

IWC has made various editions catering to the drivers of the Mercedes F1 team in the past but It’s refreshing to see them collaborate on a watch that caters to the entire staff. Being the first ‘team’ watch, this IWC Pilot 41 Chronograph edition will be adorned by the drivers along with the race engineers, designers, mechanics and the remaining staff.

Now let us talk about the watch itself. As you can expect, this being a pilot’s watch, it merges the classic design with the signature colours of the F1 team. Based on the 41mm Chronograph series, this watch gets grade 5 titanium rather than steel construction. Titanium allows the watch to be lightweight. The case is sandblasted, resulting in a subtle dark greyish tone. The bezel, screw-down crown and pushers have a polished accent. This watch also gets a comfortable 100 meters of water resistance.

The unique feature of the new Pilot Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG Petronas is its stunning dial. Encased in sapphire crystal, the watch dial is covered in the signature colors of the F1 team, Petronas Green, a bright aquamarine green tone. This color can be found on all the hands, tracks, markers and logos. The background is matte black which helps the Petronas Green pop out even more. Being a chronograph, this watch combines chronograph subdials positioned at 6-9-12 ‘o’clock position and a day-date window at the 3 ‘o’clock position. Pictures don’t do justice to this contrasting colour combination that pops much better in person.

Flipping the watch over, through the sapphire crystal case-back, you can see the in-house manufactured calibre 69385 chronograph movement, lightly decorated with perlage and circular stripes. This in-house movement beats at 4hz and provides 46 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

This exclusive IWC x AMG chronograph package comes with two straps, both equipped with the brand’s integrated EasX-CHANGE system allowing you to switch the straps without any tools. The two straps provided are a black embossed calfskin strap and a supple Petronas Green rubber strap, with both having a titanium pin buckle.
