What is the Patek Philippe Ref. 2523?
Introduced in 1953, the Ref. 2523 is Patek Philippe’s second generation of “serially produced world-time wristwatches” succeeding the Ref. 1415. Ref. 2523 features a 36 mm case with a second crown at 9 o’clock to rotate the city ring. “This system, developed from the pioneering world-time mechanism conceived by the Geneva watchmaker Louis Cottier in 1931, allowed the wearer to read the time across all major world cities at a glance.”
The reference presented by Phillips features an 18K yellow gold case with polychrome cloisonné enamel dial “depicting a map of South America.”
How rare is it?
The Ref. 2523 was crafted in “extremely limited numbers,” perhaps only 29 – 36 pieces across dial and metal combinations. Within this number, the references with cloisonné enamel dials are considered the “most visually striking and desirable variants.” Among the three known map variants, Eurasia, North America and South America, the latter is the rarest.

Only two South America dials are known to exist in yellow gold. The reference presented by Phillips was manufactured in 1953 and sold on 3rd February 1958 (according to Patek Philippe’s Extract from the Archives issued on 4th March 2026). It was last seen at an auction in New York in October 1988. Now, almost 38 years later, the Ref. 2523 with polychrome cloisonné enamel “South America” dial, among the most coveted watches in the world, is back at auction.
“While the mechanical ingenuity of the system was impressive, it is the aesthetic brilliance of the cloisonné enamel dial that elevates the present watch into the realm of horological art. At the centre of the dial, an exquisitely rendered map of South America appears in vivid polychrome enamel. The cloisonné technique involves carefully shaping delicate gold wires to outline the design before filling each compartment with coloured enamel. The dial is then repeatedly fired in a kiln until the enamel fuses into a luminous, glass-like surface. The resulting effect is breathtaking. Vintage cloisonné enamel dials possess a depth, gloss, and richness that modern examples rarely equal, due in part to the historical enamel compounds and artisanal techniques employed during the mid-20th century.”
What is the auction estimate?

Phillips will be offering the Ref. 2523 as Lot 27 as part of their Geneva Watch Auction: XXIII being held during 9 – 10 May 2026. It has an estimate in excess of Swiss Franc CHF 5,000,000.
“The Patek Philippe World-Time Ref. 2523 with South America cloisonné dial is one of the great treasures of vintage watchmaking. Its appearance at auction is an event that collectors may witness only once in a generation. With just two examples known in yellow gold and none having appeared at auction in nearly four decades, this watch represents an extraordinary moment for the vintage Patek Philippe market.” – Aurel Bacs, Senior Consultant, and Alexandre Ghotbi, Head of Watches, Europe and Middle East, Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo.

What do we think?
Patek Philippe’s world-timers (both current catalogue editions and of the past several years) are among the brand’s most iconic watches. True to their independent ethos, they keep evolving its design (while discontinuing existing references). Yet, all of them can trace their lineage back to the past world-timers such as the Ref. 1415 and 2523, thanks in part to their aesthetic and design continuity over decades.
The Ref. 2523 with polychrome cloisonné enamel “South America” dial is a peek into Patek Philippe’s vintage past and a reminder of what makes them so incredibly special and their watches so sought after.
