What is the FIA Road Safety Index?
The FIA Road Safety Index is a tool used by the Fédération Internationale dae l’Automobile (FIA) to help businesses and organisations assess, manage, and communicate their road safety impacts. It examines how road safety is considered within business processes and products/services.
The index issues two types of ratings: the supply chain rating and the products/services rating. The supply chain rating examines activities from sourcing materials to customer delivery. The products/services rating assesses the road-safety aspects of the products/services.
Honda achieved a 5-star rating under the products/services rating.
What changes has FIA Road Safety Index gone through?
FIA increased the number of stars that one can achieve from a maximum of three stars to five stars. Three additional assessment domains include: Planning, Monitoring of Safety Performance, and Safety Culture Management & Supply Chain or Products/Services Coverage.
Honda received a 3-star rating in February 2025, which at the time was the highest achievable rating. This was based on an assessment of Honda in Japan.
In the recent assessment, Honda expanded its scope to 17 countries that make up more than 90% of the global motorcycle and automobile sales. The countries assessed are Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Türkiye, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines and Brazil.
What areas of Honda’s safety programme were assessed?
The assessment considered Honda’s overall approach to road safety management and how it achieves its safety goals across its operations.
Some of the key areas noted by FIA in Honda’s safety programme include:
* Long-term safety strategy by senior management.
* Traffic collision fatalities and injuries caused by Honda products around the world.
* Monitoring and measuring the company’s progress toward meeting its safety goals via its global safety council and sustainable governance.
* Utilisation of safety technologies in different markets.
* Efforts to foster a safety culture within the organisation.
* Disclosure of information related to traffic safety.
The FIA assessment also included an evaluation of the company’s general Plan, Do, Cheque, Act (PDCA) process for managing safety projects, in addition to all new areas included in the extended Index.
What are Honda’s road-safety targets?
Honda claims it aims to reduce traffic collision fatalities involving motorcycles and vehicles by 50% worldwide by 2030. After that, the company set a long-term goal of eliminating traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and vehicles worldwide by 2050.
Its strategy is based on developing technologies, promoting safer driving and riding, and assessing real-world collision data.
The company also announced plans to use real-world traffic collision data to evaluate its technologies and identify areas that need further improvement.
When and where was the 5-star rating acknowledged?
The award was presented in September at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy during the FIA Formula One Italian Grand Prix. The 5-star rating represents the highest level in the new expanded version of the FIA Road Safety Index.
The rating does not refer to any specific Honda car or motorcycle or a year of its production. Instead, it refers to the company’s road safety strategy, as evaluated in the products/services section of the FIA index.
The FIA stated that the expanded version of the Index is expected to inspire organisations in both the public and private sectors to assess their own road-safety footprint and set improvement goals.
Therefore, the 5-star rating reflects an assessment of the company’s road safety procedures, rather than a vehicle safety test or crash-test results. The rating provides no information about the price or market introduction of any product linked to this 5-star rating.
