What is the new M.A.D.Editions M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese?

It is the third creation to come out of MB&F’s M.A.D.Editions. A tribute to legendary watchmaker Vincent Calabrese, it is inspired by his Baladin watch concept – “a poetic, wandering, jumping hour.” It is presented in two editions: Pink, for the brand’s Tribe and Friends, and Blue, open to the public via a raffle.

Who is Vincent Calabrese?

Now 82-years old, Vincent Calabrese is among the original independent watchmakers, long before independent watchmaking was even a thing.

“For more than fifty years, Calabrese has occupied a unique place in watchmaking. He is one of those figures whose influence can be found almost everywhere once you start paying attention, even if his name is not always the first to appear in mainstream discussions around modern horology. An outsider, a creative troublemaker, what he himself once called “l’enquiquineur de l’horlogerie” – literally, “the troublemaker of watchmaking” – Vincent Calabrese spent most of his life questioning conventions, challenging accepted solutions and approaching mechanics from completely different angles.

He co-founded the famous AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants) in 1985 alongside Svend Andersen at a time when independent watchmaking barely existed as a concept. He created the Golden Bridge for Corum, one of the most recognizable movement architectures ever designed. He developed wandering hours, tourbillons and countless unconventional mechanical systems, often approaching problems from completely unexpected angles. More than forty patents would follow throughout his career.”

What are its dial features?

Notice the the bombé minute ring that is crafted from sapphire, and “the integrated Super-LumiNova hidden beneath transparent elements, the layered construction of the discs, the progressive play of luminosity across the dial.”

Two editions: Pink and Blue. Aperture for the jumping hours alongside the arrow for the trailing minutes. Centre seconds hand.

“The goal was not to reproduce the original Baladin exactly as it existed before. Nor was it about turning the watch into a vintage reissue. The intention was more about preserving the spirit of Vincent Calabrese’s complication, while translating it into the M.A.D.Editions universe.”

What are its case and strap features?

Image: Renowned designer and longtime MB&F Friend Eric Giroud designed the case. The case features an abundance of details. Notice the stitching on the strap. Both editions are destined to be strap monsters.

The case is made from 316L stainless steel, measuring 40 mm (diameter) * 12.7 mm (thickness). Lug-to-lug distance is 43.7 mm. Lug width is 21 mm. Dial side domed sapphire crystal features anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Caseback domed sapphire crystal features anti-reflective treatment on the inside. Water resistant up to 3 ATM or approximately 30 metres or 90 feet.

Both editions come with a leather strap fitted with a stainless steel folding buckle.

What are its movement features?

Image: The text on the spinning rotor reads: “Il est assez aisé de plaire aux autres, bien plus ardu d’être fier de soi” (“It is fairly easy to please others, far more difficult to be proud of oneself”).

Its base movement is a Swiss Made Manufacture La Jour-Perret G111 automatic movement. The bi-directional jumping hour and trailing minutes module is developed by MB&F. It features a case fitting diameter of 25.6 mm or 11 ½ lignes, thickness of 4.45 mm, comprises 24 jewels, beats at a modern frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and delivers a power reserve of 55 hours.

“That wandering transition remained untouchable; everything else evolved around it. Built on a specially optimized La Joux-Perret G111 calibre, the movement was reworked in order to handle the energy demands of the complication more efficiently. The base calibre itself was refined with tighter tolerances and improved amplitude control to guarantee a more stable power reserve. The entire wandering hours module was then redesigned and reengineered for larger production volumes. New components were developed specifically for the M.A.D.3. The technical team worked extensively on reliability, energy transmission and long term stability, while preserving the charm of Calabrese’s original approach, in particular the visual smoothness and hypnotic feeling of the original display.”

What do we think?

I will be honest; I never really warmed up to the earlier M.A.D.Editions, especially the first one. This is more a reflection of my tastes in watches rather than the brand’s creativity. Yet, I fell in love with the the M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese when I first saw press images yesterday. I instantly knew I will have to try to get this or a future edition at some point.

Remove the hype and the unobtainability of M.A.D.Editions and I will still want it. It speaks to me on so many levels. Aesthetic, horological and storytelling. Max Büsser and Team (the Friends of the brand) have captured the spirit of Vincent Calabrese and his Baladin watch concept brilliantly in an accessible watch. The M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese is another phenomenal achievement in the MB&F universe.
