MING and Royal Selangor collaborate on a unique new watch

What is the new MING 37.06 Royal Selangor?

It is a collaboration between Horologer MING (“MING”) and Royal Selangor, two brands from Malaysia. With roots going back to 1885, Royal Selangor is a prominent global name in quality pewter, “a tin-based alloy strengthened with small amounts of copper and antimony.” The watch will be assembly in a newly developed infrastructure in Kuala Lumpur, paying tribute to both brand’s Malaysian roots.

What are its dial features?

Image: A sort of Métiers D’Art dial, though not in the traditional sense. No two dials would be the same, making each of the 88 pieces unique. “Royal Selangor’s cast pewter consists of nearly 97-percent tin, meeting the highest international standard. Unlike many metals, pewter does not tarnish or corrode easily. Over time, it develops a soft, distinctive patina, making it durable, low-maintenance, and well-suited to objects destined to be handled, worn, and lived with.”

The watch showcases a hammered pewter dial. The hour and minute hands are coated with Super-LumiNova X1. The top crystal is engraved with circular hour-markers and the brand’s logo at 12 o’clock and filled with Super-LumiNova X1. 

“Pewter is rarely used in watchmaking, but at dial scale, its qualities become especially compelling. The surface has depth without excess, texture without ornament, and a warmth that sits in deliberate contrast to the all-brushed grade-2 titanium case. In our typical fashion, the hammered effect catches light differently from every angle, giving each watch its own subtle variation.”

What are its case and strap features?

Image: Lume view contrasts well with the hammer pewter dial. The Grade-2 titanium case features an all-brushed finish. The head weight (minus the strap) weighs only 35.9 grams. “The making of pewter remains a deeply manual process. Tin, copper, and antimony are melted together, then poured into steel casting moulds and left to cool. The work then moves through filing, polishing, finishing, and decoration. While modern manufacturing and machining help, much of this process is still carried out by hand.”

The dial is housed in the brand’s 37-series Grade 2 titanium case. It measures 38 mm (diameter) * 11.05 mm (thickness). Lug-to-lug distance: 44.73 mm. Lug width: 20 mm. Dial side and caseback feature a domed sapphire crystal, with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water resistant up to 100 metres.

The watch comes with a blue grey-coloured goat leather strap from Jean Rousseau of Paris. It features curved quick-release spring bars and is fitted to a flying-blade tuck buckle with micro adjustment.

Is it powered by an automatic movement?

Image: Sellita makes dependable movements that can be serviced by qualified watchmakers worldwide. The movement features an anthracite-coated baseplate and skeletonised bridges that are rhodium-plated with a brushed finish. The skeletonised automatic-winding rotor allows a peek into the movement. Notice both brand names engraved on the caseback in their respective fonts.

Yes. It is powered by Sellita for MING SW300.M1, an automatic movement that drives the hours and minutes. It measures 25.6 mm (diameter) * 3.6 mm (thickness), comprises 25 jewels and delivers a power reserve of approximately 50 hours.

What do we think?

Image: The hammered pewter dial aesthetic is definitely an acquired taste. Though not my favourite aesthetic, it highlights the brand’s creativity and versatility; aspects very few brands can achieve.

I am familiar with Royal Selangor and its renowned pewter. My late mother was a passionate customer during the 1990s. I recall purchasing a few pewter items myself during a visit to Kuala Lumpur in 2012. I never imagined it on a watch dial.

In June, the brand collaborated with Californian independent J.N. Shapiro for the MING X J.N. Shapiro 37.06 Lightning. Now, the same 37.06 series design (but different overall dimensions, materials and movement) exhibits a hammered pewter dial from Malaysia! Different worlds, yet every bit a MING with its strong and undeniable design identity.
