George Russell secured pole position for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix after a dramatic final session at Spielberg, where Max Verstappen crashed in the closing moments and Ferrari locked out the second row.

George Russell claimed pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix after delivering a stunning final lap in a dramatic qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring, edging out Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

The Mercedes driver produced a 1:06.113 in the closing seconds of Q3 to snatch top spot, moments before yellow flags were triggered by Max Verstappen’s late crash. Russell’s lap was briefly placed under investigation due to the timing of the incident, but the stewards ultimately confirmed the result, officially handing Mercedes pole position in Spielberg.

Ferrari emerged as Russell’s closest challenger, with Leclerc securing second place ahead of team-mate Hamilton in third, underlining the Scuderia’s strong one-lap pace heading into Sunday’s race.

Antonelli Sets the Early Pace in Q1
Qualifying began in hot and sunny conditions at Spielberg, with track temperatures expected to play a major role throughout the session.

Once the opening runs were completed, Kimi Antonelli set the benchmark with a 1:07.083 to go fastest in Q1. The Mercedes rookie continued his impressive form by finishing 0.176 seconds clear of Lando Norris, while Hamilton placed third.

No driver managed to improve on Antonelli’s initial benchmark during the second runs, allowing the Italian to comfortably top the opening phase.

The first eliminations of qualifying came from the Williams, Cadillac and Aston Martin camps, all of whom failed to progress into Q2.

Antonelli Dominates Q2 as Verstappen Escapes Elimination
The second phase of qualifying proved significantly more competitive, with the order constantly shifting as teams chased improvements.

Antonelli once again emerged on top, posting a 1:06.763 to continue Mercedes’ dominance. Oscar Piastri finished second, while Norris completed the top three. Russell placed fourth, followed by Hamilton in fifth.

One of the biggest talking points of Q2 involved Max Verstappen, who found himself dangerously close to elimination. The Red Bull driver ultimately scraped through to Q3 in tenth place, surviving by the narrowest of margins.

Alpine, Audi and Haas drivers were all eliminated at the end of the session.

Russell Delivers Under Pressure as Verstappen Crashes in Q3
The final pole shootout delivered the biggest drama of the afternoon.

In a tactical opening to Q3, several drivers initially remained in the garage before committing to a single decisive run. Norris led the field onto the circuit as the battle for pole intensified.

After the first flying laps, Antonelli once again set the pace with a 1:06.414, narrowly ahead of Russell. Hamilton had yet to record a representative lap at that stage, making Ferrari’s strategy particularly intriguing.

In the final minutes, Hamilton delivered a strong lap to temporarily move into provisional pole position. His time, however, was quickly beaten by Ferrari team-mate Leclerc.

Then came the decisive moment.

Verstappen, improving rapidly and setting a purple sector, lost control and crashed into the barriers during his final attempt. Double yellow flags were immediately deployed, seemingly ending the battle for pole.

But just before the yellow flags fully neutralised the session, Russell crossed the line.

His lap proved good enough to move clear of both Ferraris and secure pole by a crucial margin, completing a dramatic turnaround for Mercedes. Although the lap was referred to the stewards for review, no infringement was found.

Russell’s pole marks another statement performance for Mercedes, but with Ferrari locking out the second row and Antonelli showing strong pace throughout qualifying, Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix is shaping up to be a tightly contested battle.
