Girard-Perregaux unveils an enticing new chronograph

The Laureato Chronograph 42 mm in two-tone with brown accents is an attractive and versatile watch. It is initially limited to 50 pieces.

What is the Laureato Chronograph 42 mm?

It is Girard-Perregaux’s (GP) three-register Laureato chronograph in a two-tone 42 mm case featuring brown accents.

What are its dial features?

Its brown dial features a Clous de Paris hobnail pattern. The hands and hour-markers are all rose-gilt. The baton-shaped hour and minute hands and hour-markers are coated with Super-LumiNova (white emission). The brand’s logo at 12 o’clock is gold-plated.

What are its case and strap features?

Image: Literally a chocolate-coloured dial and rubber strap. Notice the Laureato’s famous octagonal bezel. The snailed pattern of the subdials provides a nice contrast to the Clous de Paris hobnail pattern of the dial. The date wheel is the same colour as the dial, a thoughtful and aesthetically pleasing touch.

Its case is made from 904L stainless steel with a pink gold bezel, crown, and chronograph pushers. It measures 42 mm (diameter) * 12.16 mm (thickness). Dial side features a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistance up to 100 metres. The watch comes with a dial-matching brown rubber strap featuring a Clous de Paris hobnail pattern. It is fitted to a triple folding clasp made of stainless steel.

Is it powered by an automatic movement?

Yes. It is powered by GP03300-2761, an automatic movement that drives the central hours and minutes, small seconds (3 o’clock), chronograph functions: central seconds, 30-minute counter (9 o’clock), 12-hour counter (3 o’clock) and date (4.30). It measures 25.95 mm or 11 ½ lignes (diameter) * 6.5 mm (thickness), comprises 419 parts and 63 jewels, beats at a modern frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and has a minimum power reserve of 46 hours.

What do we think?

The Laureato Chronograph 42 mm in two-tone with brown accents is a versatile and sporty take on Girard-Perregaux’s iconic Laureato, a design that celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. It is a modular chronograph (as opposed to an integrated chronograph), a technical aspect that might not appeal to serious collectors. Then again, given the watch’s good looks, accessible price at this level of horology and a limited production run makes it a compelling proposition.
