What is the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar “Lumen”?
For Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, A. Lange & Söhne (Lange) has unveiled the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar “Lumen.” Originally introduced in 2012, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar combined the brand’s iconic Lange 1 dial layout with a tourbillon and a perpetual calendar. It is the most technically complex model in the Lange 1 collection, and among the most complex across the brand’s six collections.
Now after 14 years, this horological masterpiece receives the brand’s “Lumen” treatment, a semi-transparent sapphire crystal dial coated with luminescent material. It is the seventh “Lumen” model, the first six being the: Zeitwerk “Luminous” (2010), Grand Lange 1 “Lumen” (2013), Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase “Lumen” (2016), Datograph Up/Down “Lumen” (2018), Zeitwerk Honeygold “Lumen” (2021) and Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon Honeygold “Lumen” (2024). The Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar “Lumen” joins this rarified club and is a limited edition of 50 pieces.
What are its dial features?

The dial is made from semi-transparent sapphire-crystal coated with luminescent material. It is a complex dial architecture where each “Lumen” display is individually treated. The hands, applied hour-markers and outsize date frame are made from 750 gold with a rhodiumed finish. Hands are coated with luminescent material.
“The radiant highlight, the luminous outsize date, makes the sophisticated mechanism consisting of a tens cross and a units disc visible in the dark. Moreover, the first luminous moon-phase display with an integrated day/night indication premieres in this watch. A celestial disc that rotates clockwise once during 24 hours forms the backdrop for the lunar orbit. During the day, a light sky without stars can be perceived ‒ at night, a dark sky studded with a multitude of luminous stars. In front of the celestial disc, the precise waxing and waning of the earth’s companion can be observed while it slowly traverses the sky.”

“The leap-year display at 6 o’clock is also coated with a luminous compound, resulting in the same pronounced two-dimensional intensity of the outsize date. The hands indicating the hours, minutes, seconds, and day of the week, as well as all scales, appliques and contours of the moon, are significantly more delicate in terms of their luminescence.”
How complicated is its movement?
Extremely. It is powered by Lange manufacture calibre L225.1, a newly developed automatic movement that drives the hours, minutes and small seconds, tourbillon with stop seconds function, moon phase display with integrated day/night indication and perpetual calendar functions with instantaneously switching displays for the outsize date, retrograde day of the week, peripheral rotating month ring and leap year.

It measures 34.1 mm (diameter) * 8.3 mm (thickness), comprises of 685 parts, 74 jewels (one is a diamond endstone), 6 screwed gold chatons, beats at a luxurious rate of 3 Hz or 21,600 vph and has a power reserve of 50 hours (when fully wound). It features a lever escapement, shock resistant and free-sprung balance wheel with eccentric poising weights and an in-house manufactured “superior quality balance spring.”
What are its case and strap features?

The case is made from 950 platinum and measures 41.9 mm (diameter) * 13 mm (thickness). Dial and caseback side feature sapphire crystal (Mohs hardness of 9). The watch comes with a hand-stitched black alligator leather strap fitted with a deployant quick-lock buckle made from 950 platinum.
What do we think?
Whenever you hold a Lange watch, you know it is special. The brand’s unmistakable design identity, meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail is second to none. Their annual output does not exceed 5000 watches, making every Lange watch quite rare. In this select club, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar “Lumen” qualifies as one of their flagship models.

It has it all: the Lange 1 asymmetrical dial layout adhering to the ancient Golden Ratio, a tourbillon (never mind one can barely see it, but I promise it’s there), an unconventional perpetual calendar display with instantly switching displays ranging from a retrograde display for day of the week and a peripheral rotating disc for the month (imagine the energy required), and a free-sprung balance wheel with an in-house balance spring (exciting for watch geeks), exquisite movement finishing other aspects. I could go on and on.
Most importantly, by giving it the “Lumen” treatment, Lange has transformed this otherwise “serious” grand complication into a completely “badass” watch. To put it mildly, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar “Lumen” is possibly (at least in my humble opinion) among the most impressive watches in the world from one of the finest watch brands.
