Greubel Forsey unveils new versions of the Balancier Convexe S²

The Balancier Convexe S² in black ceramic and 5N red gold and in white ceramic are the final editions of this model. Both are limited to 11 pieces each.

What is the Balancier Convexe S² in black ceramic and 5N red gold and in white ceramic?

The Balancier Convexe S² is a high-end expression of an hours-minutes-small seconds with a power-reserve indication watch housed in Greubel Forsey’s “signature Convexe case.” The Balancier Convexe S² in both black ceramic and 5N red gold and in white ceramic are the final editions of this model and they bid farewell to its hand-wound movement “developed and built” during the past five years. Both editions are limited to 11 pieces each.

“From its origin, the Balancier Convexe S² was designed as a fully integrated object in which case geometry and movement structure evolve together. The Convexe architecture follows the natural curvature of the wrist, allowing the three-dimensional movement to remain balanced, legible, and comfortable in daily wear. Rather than enclosing the calibre, the case extends its architecture outward, reinforcing the dialogue between exterior form and mechanical construction.”

What are their dial features?

Image: Black ceramic and 5N red gold edition. The white ceramic edition is pictured in the header image. Not a conventional dial. Movement elements are visible on the dial side yet it is not an openworked dial in the traditional sense. The crown on the black ceramic edition is made from 18K 5N red gold, titanium and rubber. On the white ceramic edition, it is made from titanium and rubber. On both editions, the colour-coded rubber capping on the crown is interchangeable, an example of the brand’s exceptional attention to detail.

Skeletonised and curved profile hour and minute hands are made from polished steel with arrow tips coated with Super-LumiNova and positioned on a suspended arch bridge. Small seconds subdial at (approximately) 8 o’clock is made from gold, feature a polished bevel, engraved, black treatment (black ceramic edition) and lacquered (white ceramic edition). Second hand is made from polished steel with a flat black polished head. Power reserve indicator on a sector at (approximately) 2 o’clock, displayed by a red triangle. Indications are engraved and lacquered on the dial plate.

The “three-dimensional, variable geometry” hour-markers, polished and coated with Super-LumiNova, are placed on the “three-dimensional, variable geometry hour-ring,” also polished with an engraved and lacquered minute scale. 30° inclined balance wheel system is positioned (approximately) between 6 and 7 o’clock, secured with a “multi-level, openworked balance wheel bridge.”

How sophisticated is the movement that powers them?

Left: White ceramic edition. Notice the 30° inclined variable inertia or free-sprung balance wheel, skeletonised hour and minute hands, suspended arch bridge and movement components. Notice the circular-grained barrel cover, featuring relief-engraved text with black treatment. Right: Black ceramic edition. A closer look at the hour and minute hands, suspended arch bridge and movement components.

Extremely sophisticated, complex and beautifully finished.

The Balancier Convexe S² is powered by a hand wound movement (patents pending) that drives the hours, minutes, small seconds and power reserve indication. It measures 37 mm (diameter) * 10.05 mm (thickness), comprises of 301 parts, including 68 escapement platform parts and 43 jewels, beats at a luxurious rate of 3 Hz or 21,600 vph and has a chronometric power reserve of 72 hours.

The movement features “two coaxial series-coupled fast rotating barrels.” 1 turn every 3.2 hours. One barrel is equipped “with a slipping spring to avoid excess tension.” Variable inertia or free-sprung balance wheel with“6 gold mean-time screws.” 12.6 mm (diameter). Phillips terminal curve balance spring with a Geneva-style stud.

“The finishing philosophy remains fundamental to the identity of the timepiece. Titanium bridges and main plates are frosted and hand-finished with polished bevels, countersinks and carefully executed transitions between surfaces. Every component is treated with the same level of attention, including areas that remain largely unseen, reflecting a consistent approach to execution where integrity of construction prevails over visibility. The two final editions express contrasting visual identities while sharing the same mechanical foundation.”

What are their case and strap features?

Both editions feature a “three-dimensional, variable geometry-shaped bezel.” On the white ceramic edition (Left), it is hand-finished and on the black ceramic edition (Right), the 18K 5N red gold bezel is hand-polished with hand-finished straight-graining. Notice the titanium screws securing the lugs on both editions.

Black ceramic and 5N red gold edition: Made from black ceramic with an 18K 5N red gold bezel and caseback. White ceramic edition: Made from white ceramic.

Both editions measure 41.5 mm (caseband diameter), 44 mm (bezel diameter), 13.25 mm (case height) and 14.8 (height with sapphire crystals). Dial side features a curved synthetic sapphire crystal, ceramic profiled lugs and a caseback with a domed synthetic sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 3 ATM / 30 metres / 100 feet.

What do we think?

Greubel Forsey Balancier Contemporain and Nano Foudroyante.
Left: The brand bid farewell to the Balancier Contemporain last year. This model was also an hours-minutes-small seconds and power reserve indication watch. Right: The Nano Foudroyante was launched last year, and is based on the Nano Foudroyante EWT (Experimental Watch Technology) of 2024. It marked the brand’s 20th anniversary and was their “10th Fundamental Invention.” A grand complication housed in a reduced case diameter of 37.9 mm (caseband) and 38.3 mm (bezel), it represents a new design direction for the brand. It won the Mechanical Exception Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) on 13th November 2025 in Genève, Switzerland.

Founded in 2004, Greubel Forsey is among the earlier independent watch brands, one that joined the elite ranks of horology with its audacious tourbillons and exceptional movement finishing, among other aspects. Over the years, the brand delved into their interpretation of other complications, grand complications and simpler watches. The Balancier Convexe S² in black ceramic and 5N red gold and in white ceramic are examples of the latter; except that there is nothing “simple” about them.

Every detail about both editions, be it their dial (and dial components), movement (and movement components), case and strap, even the crown and screws, is crafted to an exceedingly high level. Its price of CHF 295K is grand complication territory from haute-horology mainstream brands. It will likely get you certain references of perpetual calendars, tourbillons and chronographs (perhaps even split-second chronographs) from A. Lange & Söhne, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, possibly with change to spare. Yet here, this figure gets you an hours-minutes-small seconds with a power reserve indication watch housed in a ceramic case with a rubber strap! That’s Greubel Forsey for you.

The brand has been transitioning away from its older collection since a year or so. 2026 will see watches from an entirely new collection from them. While I am excited about these upcoming releases; for now, let’s celebrate the final two editions of the Balancier Convexe S², an ultimate and unique expression of a versatile watch from one of the finest watch brands in the world.
