What is the Shark IRID liquid crystal helmet visor?
The IRID visor is an active photochromic screen developed by IRID Technology, embedding liquid crystal film powered by a top-mounted solar panel, aiming at solving one of riding’s most common issues: changing light conditions and their adverse effects on rider visibility.
The Liquid Crystal helmet screen darkens from clear to tinted in 0.09-1 second on visible light exposure, clearing instantly in shade, ideal for variable conditions like monsoons or desert sun – drastically enhancing rider safety.
How Does IRID Photochromic Technology Work?
IRID’s crystal visor technology for the helmet is powered by a solar panel with no battery; it activates on visible light, so it performs in clouds, tunnels, or fog without false tinting indoors or at night.
When Visible light hits the solar panel on the visor, it begins generating power to electrify the liquid crystal layer of the visor, aligning molecules to block light uniformly. IRID and Shark Helmet’s claim it’s waterproof, anti-fog, and scratch-resistant, outperforming standard UV-only photochromics.
Which Shark helmets fit IRID visors?
The Liquid Crystal Visor technology is co-developed by Shark Helmets and IRID Technology, an Italian optics firm specialising in advanced photochromic solutions. The LC Visor is designed to be compatible with Shark’s premium helmet models, such as Race-R Pro GP, Race-R Pro, and Aeron GP.
The IRID Technology–Shark LC visor lineup includes a road-approved VZ Clear version, which offers lighter tint, along with track-only VZ Dark Smoke and Iridium Blue options for stronger shading.
What are IRID visor prices?
Prices for IRID LC photochromic visors compatible with Shark helmets are €390 for VZ Clear (road -legal) and €420 for VZ Dark (Track-only) – IRID is also offering instalments option and 2 year warranty on LC Visors.
