2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Verstappen Seals Grand Slam Victory, Sainz on the Podium

Max Verstappen dominated the streets of Baku to take a commanding win at the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, clinching a Grand Slam.

The race got underway as the five red lights went out, with Verstappen, starting on hard tyres from pole, fending off Carlos Sainz on the medium compound. Behind them, drama unfolded immediately as Oscar Piastri suffered a slow getaway, dropped to 20th and then crashed at Turn 5, bringing out the Safety Car.

Further back, Nico Hülkenberg and Esteban Ocon made light contact at Turn 6, while Fernando Alonso was noted for a jump start and later handed a five-second penalty by the stewards.

When racing resumed, Verstappen kept control at the front. By Lap 17, the action had settled until Alex Albon collided with Franco Colapinto, causing the Argentine driver to spin but continue. Albon received a 10-second penalty for causing the incident.

In the pit stops, Lando Norris suffered another slow stop reminiscent of his Monza misfortune, losing valuable time.

After 51 laps, Verstappen crossed the line first to complete a flawless Grand Slam performance. George Russell finished 14.6 seconds behind in second, with Williams’ Carlos Sainz taking his first podium for the team in third. Kimi Antonelli impressed with fourth place ahead of Liam Lawson.
