Rafael Nadal wins French Open Wearing A $2.5M Watch
Tennis Superstar Rafael Nadal won his 14th French Open title wearing a unique timepiece on his wrist.
Rafael Nadal has been in a partnership with Richard Mille since 2008. The duo have released a handful of exceptionally limited edition watches together in the past.
However, the RM27-04 he wore for the 2022 Roland Garros Final has to be one of the most refined pieces to come out of the collaboration. Weighing just 30 grams, the watch is made out of a proprietary hybrid material known as TitaCarb, a mixture of titanium and carbon.
In regular watches, a manual-wound tourbillon movement is suspended inside the case using a 0.27mm thick steel cable. Though in the RM27-04, the cable has been wound to resemble the strings on a tennis racquet. The watch can stand up to 12,000G force and continue to report the accurate time – apt for a tennis player like Rafael Nadal, who can blast a serve at speeds of up to 217km/h.
The Richard Mille RM27-04 was launched last year with a price tag of $1,050,000, limited to just 50 pieces. Though, due to extreme demand for the RM27-04, its market price rose to a whopping $2.5 million, according to Chrono24.
