Over the years, Land Rover Classic has reincarnated some tasty specimens from the history books. Among them are a few Defender Works V8, in Trophy and Trophy II iterations. Extending the same list is what you see here – the Land Rover Classic Defender Works V8 Islay Edition. Yes, the name is quite a mouthful! But then, it does pack a unique punch to lure those who yearn to own a piece of automotive history.
Inspired by the Series IIa Land Rover and used by Spencer Wilks, one of the early managing directors of Rover Car Company and one of the founders of Land Rover. The ‘Islay Edition’ is derived from the Isle of Islay in Scotland. That’s where the Land Rover name was born. See, I told you! This revived version has some extra dose of specialness to it.
The exterior is finished in what Land Rover Classic calls ‘Heritage Grey’. The shade closely matches ‘Mid Grey’ used on Wilks’ original vehicle. Contrasting shade to the roof, heavy-duty steel wheels, classic-style grille and a graphic reading ‘GXC 639C’ – the registration of Wilks’ Series IIa, are the standout bits. But for the modern touch, there are LED headlights and uprated suspension and braking systems.
A similar blend of nostalgia backed by new-age enhancements is found indoors. The seats, side trim, roof lining and dashboard are draped in Windsor Ebony leather. The shoulder area of the seats, sections of the door cards, the lid of the central armrest and space behind the sun visor are finished in tweed. At the same time, a body colour accent surrounds the centre console and the Classic infotainment system, which offers satellite navigation, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity. Accompanying the gear lever is a plaque that details how the Land Rover name was conceived. Finally, multiple sections feature oak wood of whiskey barrels sourced from the Kilchoman distillery. And prepared in that distillery will be a ‘639’ limited edition whiskey, which will be given to each client of the Defender Works V8 Islay Edition.
Powering the Land Rover Classic Defender Works V8 Islay Edition is a 5.0-litre eight-cylinder engine with 405hp/515Nm. That is fed to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The combination is enough for a sub-6-second sprint time from nothing to 100kmph and a top speed of 171kmph.
Land Rover Classic will produce thirty examples of the Defender Works V8 Islay Edition, with a 13:17 split between 90 and 110 station wagon forms. The starting prices for the 90 and 110 versions are GBP 230,000 and GBP 245,000, respectively.
